Joe Nuxhall- "The Ol' Lefthander"
Joe Nuxhall, who at age 15 was the youngest player in modern Major League Baseball history to play in a game, passed away November 15, 2007 at age 79 after a long battle with cancer. Nuxhall pitched 2/3 of an inning on June 10, 1944 for the Cincinnati Reds. He went on to pitch 16 years in the majors. Nuxhall then began an illustrious carrer as a radio broadcaster for the Reds, retiring on October 3, 2004.
![]() As a kid living in Dayton, Ohio, I listened to Nuxhall on many Reds radio broadcasts. I still can hear his signature sign off, "This is the ol' lefthander rounding third and headed for home." I have no doubt that Nux is safe at Home. Rest In Peace. Last edited by cpfstich; 11-16-2007 at 10:40 AM.. |

RIP Joe.
Because of the dearth of talent during WWII, he did pitch at an early age....just wasn't able to get that third out and was relieved. Went to the minors...Later he regained his amateur status, finished high school and fought his way back into the Majors in '52. Of course I remember his career as a Reds' broadcaster, growing up a Reds fan. |
