3. Sacks marked A, B, C, D, E and F each contain 100 coins. 5 of the sacks contain coins that are exactly alike in all respects, including weight: 1 ounce per coin. One of the sacks contains coins that look exactly like the coins in the other sacks, but each coin in this sack weighs 1.1 ounces. Using an electronic scale exactly one time, how can you determine, with certainty, which sack contains the coins that weigh 1.1 ounces?

By placing all of the sacks with all of their coins in them on the scale at the same time
By removing all of the coins from the sacks, and weighing all of the sacks at the same time
By removing all of the coins from the sacks, and weighing all of the coins at the same time
By removing 1 coin from each sack, and weighing only those 6 coins
By removing 2 coins from each sack, and weighing only those 12 coins
By removing 7 coins from each sack, and weighing only those 42 coins
By removing 11 coins from each sack, and weighing only those 66 coins
By removing 13 coins from each sack, and weighing only those 78 coins
By removing 17 coins from each sack, and weighing only those 102 coins

EDIT: You may have noticed this thread was closed as soon as it was entered. That was not intended to limit your input or enjoyment in any way. On the contrary, your participation is most welcome. The action was taken to prevent eager Peeps from going into some search engine, finding the answer, and posting it, as happened on several occasions in the past. (Of course I harvest a lot of this material from other sources. You didn’t think I create it all myself, did you? I’m good, but I’m not that good!) Regrettably, that also means that folks who legitimately work out their own answers, and would like to post them, don’t get to display their prowess, but I’m afraid that can’t be helped. I’ll open the thread in a couple of days, when Peeps have had an opportunity to try their hand at a solution, and you can post away then. The official answer will come a bit after that. I appreciate your patience and understanding, and hope you enjoy the exercise

The Official Answers

Tough Test 1 - Answers

1. It will make 2 complete revolutions.

2. 1/16. Starting with 1/8 and looking at every other fraction, you have 1/8, 1/10, 1/12, 1/14 and 1/16, with the denominator increasing by 2 with each step. The other sequence begins with 1/15: 1/15, 1/12, 1/9, 1/6 and 1/3, with the denominator decreasing by 3 with each step.

3. None of the above are correct. You can determine which sack contains the 1.1 ounce coins by removing a DIFFERENT NUMBER of coins from each sack, and weighing those coins at the same time. For example: 1 coin from sack A, 2 from B, 3 from C, 4 from D, 5 from E, and 6 from F. If the scale showed the weight as 21.6 ounces (or 1 pound and 5.6 ounces), you would know that sack F contained the unusual coins, or if the weight was 21.3 ounces, that it was sack C.

4. U

5. Actor. The person is Jack Nicholson

6. 6291456. Here's how the sequence unfolds:

3 x 2 = 6
6 x 4 = 24
24 x 8 = 192
192 x 16 = 3072
3072 x 32 = 98304
98304 x 64 = 6291456

7. 4 pounds. The mixture was 90% water (18 pounds) which meant 10% (2 pounds) was not water. We can also determine that the water and non-water portions of the mixture weigh equally, if in equal quantities (X = 20 for 0.9X = 18 as well as 0.1X = 2). The mixture is now 50% water, and 50% non-water. Since we know the non-water portion of the mixture, which was not affected by evaporation, weighs 2 pounds, the water portion must also weigh 2 pounds, which makes the whole mixture 4 pounds.

8. Type faces.

9. S. The person is WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE.

10. 10

I thought I had one answered correctly. WRONG! First time I have been skunked on one of Bumper's tests.

Hope the rest of you were more up to the challenge.
