ocean safety

Is the ocean safe to swim in most of the time? We were banged up pretty bad in Ixtapa this year. We are staying at the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda.(i know, the beach sucks there)

watch out for the man eating turtles and the wild "sea" horses...they're a bit dodgy! But seriously at this time of year....I would think twice before swimming late at night...doesn't matter what distance offshore.

Very safe, almost no surf compared to Ixtapa . Have fun.. If you are going soon the weather should be a bit cooler then Zihua, But the water will be fine!

We don't arrive until the first week of feb. I'm sure it's not as hot as Ixtapa.(32c every day) Glad to hear the ocean isn't as rough.

I didn't want to say this, but....Bullsharks...predators...night feeders...in the top four most dangerous to man...also known to come up into shallow waters, especially where freshwater is pumping out into the sea (i.e. cenotes around Playa area). Do I need to say more?

Yes you will be just fine...It is beautiful! At times when the wind comes up it gets wavy but still loads of fun! Just watch for the flags on the beach!

Swimming at night (anywhere) is never a good idea inmho....otherwise the water is gorgeous!

I would never go in the ocean at night or after too many wobbly pops.

I know just what you mean about getting banged around in the water around Ixtapa. It's not like that at all around Playa. Water is very calm, no red or black flags every day, and no people wandering around with broken bones and black eyes from the waves. Bonus, you can walk on the sand without burning the bottoms of your feet off.

Regional shark attacks including Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

Shark attacks in perspective.

1997 was a pretty crappy year to be a swimmer in Q.Roo.

I too know exactly what it's like to get tossed around by the surf on Playa Palmar in Ixtapa!

And like others have said, the surf in the Mayan Riviera is nothing like that, so not to worry. Not much for undertows or riptides in the area either.

Hey eugene, your barrel wave pics- was that Ixtapa or some other beach near Zihua, like Playa Linda or something? That is some wave.

are those total attacks reported since 1880? Seems to be. So fewer unprovoked shark attack deaths than: lightning strike, bee sting, man-of-war, sting ray or 'my hotel balcony collapsed' deaths.

The ocean is very unsafe near Playa del Carmen.

Once, I had 12 beers and 6 margaritas and then I went in the ocean. I fell down several times walking into the water and I could not swim straight.

So obviously, there is something wrong with the ocean in Playa del Carmen.

But the man-eating turtles left me alone. They realized that if they tried to eat me, they would have to go to the Betty Ford Center. (Yes, I stole that line from Absolutely Fabulous.)
