Iberia to fly to Calgary!!?
The Calgary Sun (the city's best "fishwrap"
) announced yesterday that Iberia airlines would be flying Madrid - Calgary flights YEAH!! However it would seem that the announcement was simply a case of mistaken identity. I found the following letter justly sums up the mistake so I thought I would quote it here: It is a real shame that a newspaper in Calgary mixes up not only airlines but also countries. It reflects prejudicial and careless journalism at that. Just because Spanish is spoken in both countries is hardly an excuse. I hope that in other places around Canada, media has at least some primary school knowledge that Spain is in Europe and Mexico is in America. I also hope that this newspaper's incredible mistake is not a reflection of Canadians' geographic awareness but just the reflection of some 4th rate "fishwrap'" editorial quality. At least here in Mexico, we know that in Quebec you speak French and in the the rest of the Federation you speak English. I can hardly imagine a newspaper in Mexico announcing flights from Quebec City to MEX on Air France while the correct announcement would be from CDG to MEX. After all, in both places you speak French right? Stupid, stupid mistake. Plain ignorance, dumb and simple The article has been removed from the Sun's website. Idiots! |

Here is the original Calgary Sun article:
Iberia joins jetset: The planes from Spain mainly city's gain UPDATED: 2007-12-11 01:40:01 MST By SHAWN LOGAN Ole! Calgarians will soon be able to jet directly to sunny Spain when its national airline announces today it will be adding Calgary as a destination, the Sun has learned. Officials from the Calgary International Airport along with Mayor Dave Bronconnier will welcome the latest major international airline to fly into Calgary, Spain's flagship carrier Iberia Airlines. The Madrid-based airline is among the most successful in Europe, reporting a net profit of $84 million in 2006 and transporting almost 28 million passengers that same year. The carrier flies to 102 destinations in 39 countries with its fleet primarily made up of Airbus planes. Using partnerships with other companies, the carrier services 90 more destinations. The interest from Iberia comes on the heels of German carrier Lufthansa announcing last month it would be starting daily direct flights to Frankfurt, Germany, beginning on April 14 next year. British Airways and a number of U.S. carriers also jet daily into Calgary's airport, making it Canada's fourth busiest airport, serving 11.2 million passengers in 2006. How can you make that kind of mistake!!!???? Mexicana is not Iberia!!! .. |

firstly- why automatically assume it was an ignorance-based mistake and not merely a misunderstanding...not all mistakes have agendas or purely negative reasons behind them, just are just plain errors.
secondly, who reads the Sun? ![]()
