Don Emillione
Anyone else support adding Don Emillione's to a list including lunch and dinner???
I find it is not quite "rustic" and not quite "touristy", maybe somewhere in the middle. With some decent fish dishes and a good chile relleno and anything in between. Right in the heart of La Quinta, so if other places are hopping give it a try someday. Outdoor seating or inside with an open window to the street. Is it right to state that the former HC Monterrrey Super carnes on Calle 1, is no longer the same ownership and one would now need to go to CTM???? I guess I need to read more thoroughly but I was wondering if there was a simple answer?? |

There is a new location for the "old" owners of HC, on Constituyentes between Avenidas 25 and 30. I've eaten here several times, since it's right around the corner from my house. ![]() I haven't eaten at Don Emilione, thanks for the suggestion. |

The place formally known as H & C Butcher Shop – Amazing grilled meat. We took it to go, and 3 kilos was enough to feed 6 people for lunch for 2 days. I did not see any sign at all for the restaurant (I had to ask where it was), not even the Super Carnes sign some people have mentioned. Perhaps they are about to get a new sign?
Carboncitas - Another place that I am afraid may no longer exist. ChicagoDoc, Could you have been at H&M Butcher shop on Calle 1 and 25 Ave and not HC Monterrey on 20 Ave??? I kknow in the past some have been confused but it seems like things have changede at the old Super carnes location so maybe!?!? One of my great regrets is not having the carboncitos salsa sampler yet!! Glad to know they are still going strong, I know I walked by a few times before I found it the first time too. Seems real small from the facade, more bar than restaurant? I hope to find some more finds by January of 2009!!! |

Carboncitas IS still there - you can even see the goings on by watching the Hotel Cielo webcam Hotel Cielo webcam in Playa del Carmen
However, I fear it is Don Emilione that is gone (unless there is another location) but the one at south end of 5th was definately closed last 3 trips since August. I recognise the 'front guy' that used to be there is now at Big Lobster doing the sales pitch! Pretty sure that was the name of the place anyway ! |

Giallo Limone......
Went to this place last night for a "special" b-day dinner, party of 8. My mother was there last yr and raved about the food and service. Things have changed from last yr to now it seems....
The food, according to my mother has not changed, still very good! I had the chicken dish, Pollo Giallo Limone.. I think it was called.. THAT was very tasty. Another fella had the Grouper filet, very tasty as well. A few other had a Pasta dish, Fetticini Giallo Limone (I think) that was said to be very good from those that ordered it, I on the other hand did not like it.. maybe alittle to creamy for my taste, but thats probably why I didn't order it in the first place. All dishes were large portions which was nice to see. Now the bad news..... The wine pours were very, very cheap. 73 pesos for 2 inches of liquid in this huge glass??? The service was a step lower than Chucky Cheese. It took at least 30 min. for just the drink order to be placed. The so-called server was way to worried about the fifth ave scene and his girlfriends...we even questioned if this guy was supposed to be there, working there. He was doing this comedy thing that was very old and exhausting and confusing. We did not get any bread, oils, or anything BEFORE the meal.. the meal came along with the bread....(kinda backwards, if ya ask me). We were thinking that if a group of 8 is dumping around 350usd for meals, drinks and service, it would of, and should been way better. There are not that many tables there, it's a small place and they were not "swamped" so the service should of been top-notch.. is was not. Food-good... 8+ out of ten Service-bad. 1 out of ten |

Thanks for the feedback
My restaurant list must be limited to those places either I or the general opinion of regulars deems to be reliable and eating establishments worth the visit and the money. I have kept several popular places off the list because I thought they were pretty poor choices, even though others seemed to enjoy the food. But I always checked the places out myself.
Gallo Limone is a nice looking place, and many tourists seem to like it. I have tried it twice, and I share your opinion that the food is spotty (with the pastas being the best choices) and the service disinterested. I would not go back here myself, but I have seen so many reports of other visitors who had a nice time there, that I include the restaurant in the Places To Eat list, but only to acknowledge that my opinion is not the last word, however, my reviews usually contain a caveat by way of warning of the shortcomings that I have experienced. Here is my review of Gallo Limone: • Giallo Limone - is a pretty decent (but not great) Italian restaurant on 5th Avenue at 22nd Street. It has a very inviting tablecloth atmosphere but service can be annoying, but prices are fairly reasonable. Pasta specials are always very good and the servings are substantial. A 4 course meal goes for $20. |

Di Vino
Ate there last night. Service was substandard. Meal was 'ok'. Prices upper $20's.
Ate at Luna Media earlier in the week. Service was ok, food was good. Prices very reasonable. Really got to like Pizza Pazza for quick easy lunch idea. 20 pesos a slice was acceptable too...since the slices are huge!! |

We used "the list" on our trip in January and I have to say that our most memorable - in a good way - meals were the ones where we ventured off 5th. I could really go for some empanadas from Doña Maria's right now! I gave my copy of the list to a just arrived couple checking in to Posada Mariposa as we were checking out. Hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. Thanks for all your work compiling it!
