When I was a college student I used to go to two or three movies a week by myself. But back then there were a lot of revival houses and other places to see cheap, great movies. Now, not so many. We saw the original stage version in Boston while they were still working the kinks out before it went to Broadway. Incredible!
But I cannot WAIT to see what Tim Burton and his cast have done. Sondheim gave a really interesting interview about the film in the NY Times; he was quite involved in adapting the stageplay to the screen, and his comments made me very curious about what we will and will not be seeing ... |

MWC, if you can get yourself down to the Zeigfield to see it on the big screen you should definitely take the opportunity! They've cut a lot of the original tunes from the stage production -- some of which makes sense as you don't need a lot of exposition in a film when you can just show flashbacks, etc. It was quite gory, but in a comical, "B" movie kinda way -- but not campy at all. It's a dead serious tale of revenge set to those brilliant dark lyrics and discordant Sondheim melodies. Awesome, if not unusual, holiday movie.
