A little Christmas-tale......
Got this in a German email from a friend and thought I'd translate for you guys as I loved it......... although some of the humor might be lost as the names in the story will not seem as funny to you as they do to someone from Germany, for different reasons.
Normally this is an audio-thing, read by a guy in a soft newspresenter voice. So if you imagine that while reading it gets even funnier. Maybe. Happy Holidays!!! Sonntag, 1. Advent 10.00 a.m.: In the little suburbian townhousearea of Önkelstieg pensioneer Erna B. lets her grandson install three electric candles in her living room window. Festive spirit ensues, the happiness is palpable. 10.14 am: When taking out his garbage neighbor Ottfried P. sees the provoking Christmas-push next door and reacts by starting to set up his Danish 10-candle set, each 15 Watt, in his kitchen window. A few hours later the whole area of the Önkelstieg glows in the festive light of 134 window decorations in total. 7.03 pm: The engineer on duty in the nearby power-plant Sottrup-Höcklage registers a sudden change on the meters from the area of Önkelstieg- he considers it a defect and remains unsuspecting.. 8.17 pm: Horst and Heidi E. manage to chain-link 96 Halogen movie set lights throughout the trees of their garden and connect them to the local electricity net. The birds inhabiting the garden react confused and start singing and building nests. 8.56 pm: Clubowner Alfons K. feels the need to contribute to the festive spirit by installing the laser-ensemble „Metropolis“ on the roof of his bungalow. After a few minutes of the constant fire of Santa Claus being projected onto them the walls of the next door silo turn to dust, making a loud and very unpleasant noise. 9.30 pm: Due to the hubub of the ongoing Christmas party of the power plants workers the alarm signal from generator hall 5 remains unheard. 9.50 pm: 85 year old war veteran Adolf R. proudly projects the star of Bethlehem onto the low lying clouds by the means of 190 flak-lights Varta Volkssturm.. 10.12 pm: A group of confused Asian buisnessmen wanders the streets of the Önkelstieg with their carry-on luggage and wearing summerly clothing. Their Boing 747, Singapur Airlines, had landed on the entry way to the garage of bakery Bröhrmeier a few minutes prior, after the entryway had been decorated with 3000 coloured neon-lights shortly prior to that. 10.37 pm: NASAs Voyager 7, located at the edge of the Milkyway, transmits pictures of an apparent supernova on the northern hemisphere back to homebase. Experts are not able to explain the phenomenon. 10.50 pm: A slight quake runs through the soil near the power plant, the whole complex with it’s 30 turbines is running above it’s capacity and is emmiting a horrific noise. 11.06 pm: Student Bettina U. awakes in Önkelstieg and, upon looking out her window, is filled with joy about the sunny December morning. She turns on her coffee machine at exactly 11.12 pm and 13 seconds. 11.12 pm and 14 seconds: In the sudden darkness enveloping the whole state of Lower Saxony the explosion of the power plant together with the noise of thunder it creates is especially impressive. Confused people can be seen wandering the dark streets. People like you and me, for whom a single candle in the window wasn’t enough......

And classic German thing for you to enjoy as well- this is on every New Years eve since around thirty years in EVERY household in Germany I dare say........... transmitted traditionally at half past seven on TV.
Dinner for one- the 90th birthday...... and watch out for the very last communication between the two........ I didn't get that until I was waaay in my twenties. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() It translates well...at least where we live. ![]() ![]() At some point we need to take some pictures of the decorated houses around us. We are not sure, but we think there is some unwritten contest for the cheesiest X-mas house decorum on the block... |

Translates perfectly CC!!
Funny thing is last night, My Grandmother (bless her heart), gave me one of those single candles for my birthday!! Good news...it runs on batteries though!! I shall put it in my window tonight, turn it on, think of you Joana, and see what kind of mayhem ensues in my little town in Wisconsin!! ![]() |

I love it, too- although I have been subjected to it every single nye since my childhood I still laugh until I cry.......and believe me, during the time that it is on TV here in Germany it is better not to even try and call your friends. Noone will answer the phone anyhow.
