Waaaah!! Or: my special Mexican Christmas present....
Folks- I just had the shock of my life here and thought I'd share as I am sure this has happened to others before........
I finally started seriously unpacking my stuff- not only distributing it all over the place. So I get to my dive gear- which has spent it's time unused in the appartment, even though unpacked. I do what every good diver does- set out to blow up my BCD before I hang it up, better to store it that way. Grab the inflator, blow- and notice a rapid movement towards me, my face. Hold the BCD away from me to see just in time one of those HUGE cucarachas heading up the inflator!!!! And yes- my first reaction was a VERY girly and loud "Squeeeeeeeeeek" combined with throwing the thing meters away from me. Second- panic!! A cucaracha in my house!!!!! AAAAAAAH. Can. Not. Touch. Those. What to do, what to do????????? Got a towel from the kitchen- no clue what for as NOONE would EVER make me touch a cucaracha, not even with metalgloves on. Wonder if the thing has moved somewhere in my appartment or .......... is it still in my BCD? Have no balcony or garden........ so decided as first aid to throw the whole thing into the hallway. Did so. Eyed it suspiciously. Shook it. Thinking "Please crawl once more because if you don't you are IN my appartment now..........!!!!!" It crawled to dissapear somewhere else in my BCD- I slammed the door shut. Now what???? Called a friends Christmas-meeting in utter panic............. in the end she and her father came over a sec ago, collected the BCD in a plastic bag and will leave it in their garden for a few days to then check back on the cockroach. Ugh. Can you imagine how SCARED I am now that more of those suckers are in my luggage? Eeeeek. What are the odds? In my whole time in Playa I saw two- one ran out the leg of my pant when I was going to put it on and dissapeared under the fridge, I suspect this might be the same one that is in my BCD now as I didn't see any other in my appartment. The other I saw outside somewhere. And now this. Wish me luck!!!! I hope no more roaches are hiding in my stuff..........

Too funny ! Just think though.... The poor cucaracha is alone in a foriegn country without friends and family, and you just had it put outside to freeze in the European winter on Christmas day !
Happy Christmas Joanna, you are missed around here ! |

One word, Joana... SHOES! Ya gotta chase that sucker down and smack the heck out of him with a shoe, preferably a flip-flop. I learned early on that jumping up and down screaming, "IHATEYOUIHATEYOUIHATEYOU!!!!" has no effect on them whatsoever.

hehehe...gross! I TOTALLY feel for you! Living in a more tropical climate, I have been awakened by having a roach crawl across me in the middle of the night....needless to say, I did NOT sleep until I had trapped it, killed it, and flushed it off to it's watery grave!

Maybe it's the language barrier? Should we try a variety of Spanish swearwords next time as IHATEYOU and SQUEEEEEEEE don't work? Heard though that using shoes is the worst you can do in case they carry eggs........ theory has it that you'll kill the roach but the eggs will be all over the place. Not that I'll ever be in a position to find out- even a five meter radius is not enough for me when it comes to those creatures. There are not many things that groce me out- but THEY do. UGH. |

HATE doesn't even start to describe my feelings when it comes to roaches........
@Jez Miss all ya'll as well!!! Loads!!!! *smooch* @Scott Roaches are the one thing were NO rational thought helps me. None. @Kelli No clue how I survived the time I lived there with those critters around..... as long as they are far away and running and all I am fine. Thing is though in my Mexican appartments I always had tiles and not much furniture- so not many places to hide and multiply for them. In my appartment here- cockroach heaven................. |

Hm. *eyes rest of luggage suspiciously*
I think I'll do the rest of the unpacking with a window and the hallway door wide open. If anything moves or stares at me I'll throw it out. Now let's just hope that none are in my undies- that would be embarrassing if I had to throw them out the window.
