Tiger got your tail
Just read the news about the fatal tiger attack in the San Fransisco Zoo. Pretty serious stuff. But I guess there's new tiger skins up for sale. The one part of the story that is kindda funny. Is that the tiger refused to stop when the cops yelled at him to stop. I mean just what did the cops think that he'd do after attacking three people?

You left out the part that the three people were taunting the tiger. So once again, we superior humans end up killing a beautiful creature because some morons think its funny to harass a captive animal.
I'm sorry but what part of don't f^&* with a man eater did these people not understand? |

I feel very conflicted about zoo's in the first place. It would be nice if they could just be for animals in rehab from injurys or who were rescued from other bad situations. But for animals like this is just seems so unfair.

Mike - where did you read that? I read that the tiger escaped it's pen and attacked three people in a cafe in the zoo about 1/8 of a mile from it's cage - nothing about taunting or teasing? |

I've read about that too but over here they wrote that the man who got killed was near the cage. And the tiger must have climbed the wall to escape... yeah, right... I don't believe that. I've seen tigers in their natural environment in India and one ran between our jeeps only a short distance away from us. We were not protected at all but I never felt threatened by them even for one single second. Tigers don't get aggressive unless they are hungry or have been provoked (or something happens which gives the wrong signal to their instincts like it happened to Roy in Las Vegas with his famous white tiger).

Got this off the web: "One of the victims was killed outside the grotto where the tigers are kept, while the other two men were attacked near a café on the east end of the zoo, where the tiger was shot dead by police officers. "
Couldn't find details about the taunting....not saying it didn't happen, but the OTHER two people were nowhere near the tigers cage......very very sad! |

Here is a bit more:
"Although some zoo officials speculate the threesome may have teased the tiger, San Francisco police Lt. Leroy Lindo said police currently have no reason to believe the three men taunted the animal prior to the attack, which happened shortly after the zoo's 5 p.m. closing time. Dozens of visitors and some employees were still inside the zoo at the time." |

IMHO there is NOTHING worth applauding in this story.
I don't care if these guys were taunting the tiger. No one deserves to to be killed for teasing a tiger anymore than someone deserves to be shot in cold blood for stealing some tools out of a truck. While some people believe that keeping animals in captivity is inhumane, I take a more moderate approach. I think it is a good idea to keep small samples of wild animals in zoos, as long as their habitats are as large and natural as possible and they are well treated. Zoos are important in terms of research which aids in conservation. Zoos are vital in order to convey the majesty of wild animals to the public and in order to create a sense of "kinship" and caring on the part of the public who are able to see these animals. Tragically, accidents will happen. Luckily, they are few and far between at zoos. Hopefully, some good will come from this tragedy and zoos all over the world will take the time to reevaluate their safety measures. |
