I don't believe my son who has been drinking here since he first came at 17 has ever had to show ID here on any of his visits. Maybe if someone looked exceptionally young for their age, but I can't imagine it.

you wont have a problem during the day time party i dont think a single bar has asked anyone around me for id and ive been arround the only problem you might have ( and i dont think so , just like susie said unless you look really young ) would be in santanera , bali the clubs thats where you might encounter some jerk but i think you should be fine welcome and enjoy your time here your going to have a ball

In the last 17 years, I have never witnessed anyone getting carded. And I've seen some very young looking people ordering. That is not to say it does not happen., but you'd probably have to look about 7 years old. Attitudes are different down here and the locals seem to be indifferent in this regard.

Apart from those countries that outlaw alcohol for everyone most nations look askance at the weird US prohibition with respect to under-21 laws. It's hard to imagine a nation that will let its youth fight and die but not have a drink. In general prohibition leads to excess instead of responsibility. In much of the world children are introduced to wine within the home at an early age and learn to be responsible. In America it is demonized and the result? - girls gone wild. Enjoy Playa, you are old enough.

Youngbuck when are you going to be done there? A group of us, 21-24 year olds are heading down in March. Just keep reading the threads as I have and you will learn what bars you want to check out. We are staying right above Senor Frogs and you are right there will be girls there especially when there is a cruise ship tendering in.

Carding does happen here...I have witnessed it. It can happen at the entrance of clubs. If you are young or young looking have your id with you.

Relax, Canard. He was merely asking what I thought to be an intelligent question about whether he needed to carry his ID with him in Playa, not for a foreignor's views on the drinking age laws of the USA. But then again... why pass on an opportunity to do a little USA-bashing, huh.

I just wish I was 18 again to join you. Many of us older wiser(?) people on this site would give away some body part to be 18 again. The age of 18 to 21 was spent in a fraturnity house in Missouri having an absolute blast everyday. I hope that you make ths most of the next few years and have fun but be responsible for your actions. While in PDC, keep in mind that you will be outside the US and you do not have the same luxieries that you have at home. You may be able to drink at 18, but you can also get in to various forms of trouble in PDC too. Just keep your head on and be wise about decisions you make while sampling the local beverages. Most of all, have fun and make good memories to last a lifetime.

agreed, Canard was off-topic. However, questioning a stance, law or policy of any country doesn't really imply bashing, does it? It IS hard to understand how you can die for the US in combat without having the right to sip a Bud, and it IS supported by many studies (and our own history) that prohibition leads to excess and abuse. I agree with Canard. Am I USA-bashing? (and now I'm off topic as well!)
