Camel rustling in Bastrop County

Missing: A six-foot-tall, affectionate camel named Moses and his best friend, Coco, a bossy old Shetland pony.
Both of the animals disappeared from their pasture Tuesday night at the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek in Bastrop County. They were probably stolen by someone who coaxed them to a trailer, said Michael Hicks, the zoo director.
“How else would you take a 500-pound camel?” Hicks said. “We’re all just heartbroken at the zoo.
Moses is not your ordinary one-humped camel, Hicks said. He is a star attraction at the zoo, along with Rajah the white tiger and Bamboo the African lion, Hicks said. “Moses has the best personality of any camel I’ve ever known,” Hicks said.
The camel is very friendly and loved getting hugs from zoo visitors, Hicks said. He also loved doing his “happy dance,” Hicks said. “He would throw up his heels and bound around like a puppy,
Whoever took Moses was probably in the animal business, Hicks said. Moses would be especially appealing because he is at the age where he can be trained to be ridden, he said.
But the camel could not have been coaxed into a trailer without his 20-year-old Shetland pony pal Coco, Hicks said. When Hicks first bought the camel from a Central Texas animal dealer, Hicks said, Coco raised Moses like he was her baby.
The camel rustler probably took away the animals after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, when Hicks last checked on them, he said.
The camel has some identifying marks, including a small indentation on the top of his nose where his bridle fit and a pencil-shaped scar near his front right knee. The pony is deep brown with some gray on her head.
Anyone with information is asked to Deputy Tommy Cooper at the Bastrop County Sheriff’s office at 512-303-1080 or the zoo at 512-303-6675. Hicks said he is offering a $400 reward for their return.
