The ferry that leaves from the Gran Puerto Cancun dock is a new Ultra Mar ferry. It is where the taxi drivers and colectivos let the tourists off to go to Isla from Puerto Juarez. The ride is about 15 minutes. Next stop is the older slower ferry, which is ok too but seems the drivers think all tourists want the newer faster boat. (maybe they do) Cost is cheap to go over...I don't remember the price and don't know if the older slower boat is cheaper.

Back in 2000 when we stayed in Cancun for a week, we did a day trip on an all-inclusive HUGH double decker boat where they provided free(part of all-inclusive) frozen type drinks(with tequila, etc)going and coming back. Once at Isla people(part of all-inclusive) that wanted to snorkel went out on smaller boats, we enjoyed snokeling there better then Cozumel(at least Cozumel was very windy and water choppy when we went 2004). They also provided free lunch and drinks(part of all-inclusive) on the island and had plenty time to shop and drink during the afternoon. On the way back they did musical chairs, etc. We had a BLAST that day. Think it may have been called Caribbean Funday?

I almost made the trip last year, but I was going t o have to take grouchy (my father-in-law. He wasn't really up for that physically in my eyes, so we didn't go. In everyones honest opinion, would you take two, 3-year-olds through all that for a visit? It would take: cab ride, bus, cab ride, boat, golf cart, and then reverse.

Can you compare it to going to Cozumel? On a light
cruise ship day?
I'm debating where I'll spend a couple beach days...one Tulum and/or Akumal and one Isla M or Coz...don't need to snorkel, just walk around, enjoy good food drinks laid back relaxed atmosphere. Thanks! |

)About Isla Mujeres, how easy it is to get a "walk-in-room" over there? We were thinking of making the trip but would like to stay overnight. And - here comes the stupid question - if we manage to get a room, do we need our passports with us or just color copies?
