Yucatan Peninsula - December-January 2008-09
We're thinking we might head back to the Yucatan Peninsula in Dec/Jan 2008-09. It would give us a certain regularity, having been there in December 2004 and 2006.
We're thinking a week in Mérida, some time around and a week in Playa. It would be great to have some peeps along for all or parts of Mérida- and we know ya'll will be in Playa around Christmas and New Year's Eve. Maybe some small group touring. Dunno. We'll see what kind of response this gets. |

I would say there's a good chance we might show up if you get this going. I've been to/through Merida a few times now with never much, if any, time to stop and enjoy. It'd be nice to see it with a guide who has a little experience.
Although I honestly hope we'll make it there long before then. Can't imagine we wouldn't want to go back though. Hey, maybe we'll trade a tour to Isamal and Rio Lagartos for one of Merida! |

We've done some more talking here. The decision has been made as far as timing. Working at colleges like we do that is a good time period for vacation.
I'm thinking it will likely be December 12-27 - with the first part spent in and around Merida/Gulf Coast/nearby Maya ruins and the second part in Playa. Merida is a serious candidate city for us to spend some time in during retirement, so part of our sightseeing there may be a bit dull for some - unless you like checking various colonias and the like |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love that area!!! For next Christmas, we are thinking about going to Tikal, then hanging out in Belize for a few days and from there spend some time in Mahajual and Tulum. I won't be done with classes until around the 21st. We are still in the planning stages, but I wouldn't mind going back to Merida. We didn't get to explore Progreso and other points north of Merida. Also, I wanted to go to Izamal and spend a couple of days there.![]() |

If we do that trip we'll split our time between Merida, Progreso, Tekanto and the gulf coast. We know our way around and we have the advantage of family showing us some of the best places. There's an old trip report that you may remember here: http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carm...oto-essay.html |

We'll be having dinner at Los Almendros on at least on night and a late Lunch at Hacienda Teya on another day. Izamal and Uxmal will also be on the itinerary (no Rosa for Uxmal, she's been there too many times, the last time she just slept on a wall under a tree till I was done). I'll have my bike with GPS and will probably do two bike tours (one in Merida, then another one across the countryside (trails not roads). Celestun is a kind of obligatory trip, but we'd probably do a variation, perhaps even Isla Arena. In the past the Flamingos appear to prefer to be further east on the gulf. there were a lot more to be seen from the road near Xcambo than from the boat near Celestun. ..........and midnight mass in Tekanto will be a highlight. It would be interesting to stay for the Pegan celebrations on New Years eve. But the old Mayan people that used to organize them are no longer with us, and so I'm not certain if they are still being performed. I've started the trip planning dialog with Rosa, she will be the one to approve it or otherwise. |
