Anyway, people on "the internets" have been putting forward suggestions. There's one that seems particularly plausible to me: it is a statue representing a mermaid; we already know Mars once had water and this looks like intelligent life (human, sort of...) hence mermaids.

Fish + human brain = intelligent life, get it?

Obviously, it was built by an ancient civilisation that later departed Mars and settled Denmark.
