Carnival in Venice without masks

Just read that in Venice this year the parades are supposed to be without the traditional masks since they are 'too sad'. I am not sure I like that. For me the image of the carnival in Venice is linked to the beautiful masks although you don't see whether the persons behind that mask is laughing or crying... sounds strange to me to have Carnival in Venice without masks.

Can you imagine these costumes without the masks? For me they would not be the same anymore.

They seem to have a new 'art director' who doesn't want them in the parades any more.
