Hot & Spicy Dish

I wish I could say I was talking about myself.
My husband loves hot or spicy foods, actually the hotter the better. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I did try to post on the Changarros y más forum, but wasn't able to. Please feel free to move me.

I'd say it's more common down here to ADD heat to food at the table rather than actually prepare it that way. Or maybe that's just because there are so many gringos down here who don't wanna eat "picante." Most meals are served with a fiery green salsa on the side that will cause flames to erupt from the ears of most of those who didn't grow up with it.

But for the life of me, I can't think of one single dish that is actually served picante. I'm sure there are lots and that someone else will pop in here with them shortly.

Plato Picante

First, what Susie says is obviously (because it’s Susie) correct. And so if you like spicy hot you could take some rather bland fish tacos (or many other common foods) and then with the magic salsa turned them into a hot and spicy dish. My wife even does this with Pizza.

For other options, there’s one Indian restaurant in town and you can also get Thai food in Playa though you may have to ask for extra spicy to avoid a bland supposedly gringo friendly version. I even have a Chinese restaurant make me a curry every time I'm in Playa.

As a technical note (that is of little practical use): There is one Yucatecan dish that is served picante (spicy hot no need to add salsa)….and that is pavo en relleno negro (turkey in black filling). The key here is that the black sauce is supposed to contain burnt chiles de arbol. They are burnt black and then crushed up into the sauce.

However, Yucatecan food is not generally available in Playa (with a few minor exceptions) and the one restaurant that I visit that does have pavo en relleno negro on the menu, serves a very bland version that may simply be turkey in black bean salsa which is really not the same thing. The nearest place to Playa that I know of that serves real pavo en relleno negro, spicy hot the way I like it is in Cancun.

….most restaurants will have a spicy hot salsa available and if you don’t see one ask, they’ll normally bring something suitable to the table. This is a common request that my wife has when we are in Playa, and the restaurants can usually find her a nice hot salsa so she can enjoy the meal.

I have a favourite (though, as the woman says you have to add spice to make it hot): Frijoles Charros Especiales, at El Pastorcito (30th Av. & 30th St.).

A big, steaming bowl of beans, chorizo, chuletas and vegetables. Just the ticket for the chilly nights we're having in Playa.

My husband is always asking for the green suace (habenero) or if they have a hotter salsa to mix in his food.

HI Ksue,

Just be sure to taste a bit of any sauce you or your hubby put on your food, believe me when I tell you there are some green sauces that will blow you away, for example the habenero sauce at Mamitas was the hottest thing I ever tasted , and I'm a fan of hot & spicy too.

There is a spicy dish at Carboncitos and my sister ordered it and it was so hot she couldn't eat it. The waiter even warned her it was hot, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. Can anyone help me with this? Silvergirl? You were there when she ordered it, do you remember?? (I'm sure not, since you were in no shape to remember!)

Queencityfan,
I'm not a big fan of hot and spicy foods. It's to painful the next morning, but it doesn't seem to bother my husband going in or out.

Jimontheriver, (Would that be the Mississippi?)

I had a boyfriend in college that would have to wipe the sweat off his face whlie eating hot/spicy foods.

A measure of how hot most dishes are is by how much your forehead sweats and for how long...A three alarm sweat usally requires many cerveza to offset the loss of fluids!!! Or... is it just hot in Playa so I'm sweating anyways and drinking a lot of cervezas and this is some lame rationalization!? Doesn't mater. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it!
