condo at Xaman-Ha or Fishermans Village?

Hello,
Which would you recommend for a family with three small children?
Thanks,
Jessica

Jessica,
The beach in front of Xaman Ha is not very big right now if that is important to you. We stay at Fisherman's and they have added big sandbags to "reclaim" the beach. But it can also be difficult to get a room at Fisherman's during the winter months. We normally book almost a year ahead for our stay in February/March.

Hi,
Thanks for your input. We did find an available condo somehow for our dates in March. A beautiful beach is important to us however I've heard that Xaman-Ha is really fun for kids? Are there many kids at Fishermans?
Thank you,
Jessica

the beach in front of Xaman Ha looks OK to me; it's actually bigger than when we were first there in 2005. I hope it stays that way until April 14. If not, I will still be happy. A small beach is better than none at all....................

Jessica,
We have not stayed at Xaman Ha only at Fisherman's. When I was there in January, there were no beach chairs in front of Xaman Ha as there is really not enough room. There were a few people sitting on the sand. Just south of Xaman Ha is a beach club that is owned by Fisherman's and you can rent chairs and food & beverages are available. If you would like to see recent pictures of the beach at Fisherman's, Caramba was there in December and has some pictures in her trip report.
I have not seen a lot of kids at Fisherman's when we have been there (end of February) but it is not a very big place.

Jessica,
Here is a pic from Caramba's trip report looking across the pool at Fisherman's to the beach area.
Let me know if you have any other questions about Fisherman's.

Dee Dee,

Thank you so much!! I think we're leaning towards fishermans because we love the beach. However, the kids love swimming in the pool too.

Jessica, another consideration would be that Fisherman's is a farther walk into town than Xaman Ha, with 3 small kids that might sway your decision.

Another thing to note is that Fisherman's operates a beach club next door to the Xaman Ha building, and you can purchase all-inclusive day passes there if you decide to rent in Xaman Ha (or just plop on the sand with a cooler for free, as long as you don't use any of the Fisherman's facilities).

I'm glad you were able to find a condo for your dates! All of the units I have access to in Xaman Ha are already booked.

Hi Heather,
Thank you so much. Is there a map somewhere that shows where all these hotels are in relation to the town/5th Ave?
I cannot seem to find a good map.
Thanks,
Jessica

Does Fishermans make you pay for the chairs on their beach?

If I recall correctly, they had two options to chose from. One was $15 for lunch-type meal (hamburger, quesadilla, etc.) and use of facilities (chair, bathrooms) and the second was $25 for the same as above plus 4 beverages. We are members at Fisherman's so I didn't purchase either option but we were allowed to use the facilities. We did buy two bottles of water and it was 36 pesos .

Jessica, Locgringo has a great map that you can manipulate to the area you're interested in here Playa del Carmen: photo tour, aerial images. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

It is my understanding that there are only the two options at the beach club because they don't have the full kitchen/restaraunt and full bar options there. When we are staying at the resort and using the facilities there, they offer a "meal plan". We just checked with them for our visit at the end of Feb and they quoted us $52.90 per person per day. The "meal plan" included breakfast and one other meal and all beverages.
