AI with great food? in PDC?

which resort have you been to in pdc that had great food? we are looking into resorts such as viva azteca, viva maya, reef club and allegro. what have you experiences been like. is the food kept warm, has flavor, etc. we just returned from 5 star in the mayan ( akumal) and the food was very disappointing, cold and no flavor!

I've eaten at 3 of the 4 above and I doubt you're going to find "great" food at any of them, in that price range. I enjoyed the food quite a lot in both the specialty restaurants at the allegro, and the japanese restaurant at the azteca, but the italian at the maya was not good at all when we ate there. I would have to say the buffet food was better at the azteca than the allegro, but all of it was certainly edible and I never went hungry (unfortunately, to the contrary, and got fat in a week's time! ). In general, I doubt there is any lower-range AI known for great food.

thanks, so you would have to say the azteca had the best food out of my list? I have to also add that we had gone to caracol village when it was a 3 star and it blew our socks off for food, we were very impressed with the selection and flavor and that all of it was actually kept warm the entire time. so i think you can find great food at a 4 star or under. I just came from a 5 star like i mentioned and caracol's was very better!

Overall, yes, I'd vote for the azteca of the 3 I've been to, though the specialty restaurants at allegro were much, much better than the italian at the maya. However the sushi (Japanese) restaurant at the azteca was better than either at the allegro. And I'd choose to eat at azteca's buffet over the allegro as well.

EDIT: when you stay at either azteca or maya, you can eat at the restaurants at the other, or at least we could when we stayed there.

I have to say we have stayed at Barcelo,Palladium and a few others and RIU Yucatan had the best evening buffets we have ever had. Quality was excellent, best tasting food, alway hot. Barcelo comes in second and Palladium the worst food we have ever had at an AI.
Lunch buffet at the RIU was just ok, not much stuff but enough, same stuff every day.
Barcelo has great alacarte restaurants.
RIU wins in the buffet, we did do the steak house but it was just ok. Buffet way better.

thanks everyone, but want to stay as close to pdc as we can and at a affordable as we can! That is why we choose the 4 that we did as they are the cheapest out of wpg. good to know though for future vacations when we spend the few extra bucks for a better resort.

Iberostar Lindo and Grand has great food, but not really in pDC. The Royal Hideaway has pretty fabulous food and a price tag to match.

We stayed at the Royal in town - loved the food and resort in general. We also ate at the Gran Porto Real next door - good food and environment, but the beach and resort in general are much better at the Royal. Either way you'll be in Playa - have fun!

Hmmm.... hard question. I think Allegro probably had more overall appeal to me because it seemed smaller and more friendly, perhaps also more "Mexican" with its palapa roof rooms as well (though I would advise asking for a room that wasn't on the top floor as there are other issues with those). It had two pools - one where activities were centered and another, quieter, behind it. I believe each had steps into it. The Azteca and Maya pools were probably larger though. There's no swim-up bar at Azteca but there is at Maya (if I'm remembering correctly, anyway). And that's about all I can remember!
