moving to playa during hurricane season
i have decided to temporarily move to playa to see if i like it but won't be able to to it until may or june (i travel once a month for a project). anyway, i did some searches on the forum for hurricane season and i noticed everyone would be "relieved" if nothing were to happen and yes, i know of how horrible hurricanes can be.
with that said, i wanted to ask: what exactly is hurricane season like? it lasts such a long time and so i wonder if it's always gray like a rainy season, always humid and hot but gray still, always this, always that? or is it a normal warm season with the chances of hurricane. i'm asking specifically in that area. when i was in playa, we actually drove outside of the town to go to some cenotes and saw some property damaged by "the hurricane". basically, i want to know: what am i looking forward to when i move to playa in may or june? what am i in for? what should i expect weather wise from the hurricane season? (geez, i asked the same question three times.) thanks guys! |

It's my personal opinion that there is no way to tell what the weather is going to be like in the (somewhat near) future. All you can do is look back in history for tendencies. |

Funny thing about hurricane season: if it's baseball season, you can be certain there are baseball games to be found, left and right; if it's hunting season, you can bet your bottom dollar there are hunters out there a'huntin' to their hearts' content; if it's the holiday season, well you can hardly step out your door or stop by the grocery store without being hit by holiday decorations and music and sales and all the rest of it.
But you'd be hard pressed to find a hurricane around at just about any point during hurricane "season". Steve |

![]() It was May when I moved here 4 years ago. You couldn't have proved it was hurricane season by me (actually, it doesn't start until June 1). Hurricane season probably won't bother you but summer will. |

Hurricane season only means that it is more likely that there will be a hurricane than in non-hurricane season.
Please keep in mind that "more likely" and "definitely" are to completely different things. We have gone 3 times in the middle of hurricane season and have never had a problem. |

I can only ditto the tenor of what others here have said- in May, June, July, August what will rather bother you than an actualy hurricane (hopefully) is the heat and humidity.
In later months (September/ October/ November= rainy season) there can be rain- but then mostly it never lasts for that long. |

I lived in Playa for 10 years and there was only a couple of hurricanes and a couple of scares. During hurricane season you'll see some rain in the afternoon some days, usually a short powerful shower that is sooo welcome, because it freshens up the air after a hot, humid day. You'll probably see some windy days, and some rainy days, but it certainly doesn't rain all the time, and there CERTAINLY isn't a hurricane every year. Also, remember that hurricanes are quite local, so even if the Mayan Riviera has one, Playa may not see any damage at all - that has happened before.
And what ryberg said. Well put, dude. |
