Newbie - Honeymoon July 08

Hi there,
Have just discovered this site after searching on the net for info on Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
We are getting married in July and originally wanted to book a honeymoon in Cancun however after reading/posting on various wedding forums have been old that Playa Del Carmen would be more suitable. Bearing in mind me and H2B aren't massively into relaxing and quiet resorts i am after some advice as to which would be the better resort?
I love sunbathing and he likes sports so we need a hotel which provides a gym and some activities and is close to shops and bars for some nightlife in the evening and of course a bit of luxury as it is our honeymoon!
I have been looking at the Riu Cancun but after reading some reviews on Trip Advisor have been put off slighty can anyone recommend any other hotels in the area?
any help would be appreciated I feel like I'm going round in circles at the moment!!

I would say the Royal Playa Del Carmen. It is on the north beach in Playa and you are within walking distance to all the restaurants, bars, and shops on 5th and 10th Ave. Check out the reviews..

Hi, The best place is Porto Playa Condo Hotel. It's part of a group of luxury condo hotels known as condohotelsplayadelcarmen.com.
Porto Playa has maid service, condos and penthouses, a great gym on site that has everything including yoga, exercise classes, massages (in room also) and all the equipment. A 5 star restaurant on site, Negro Sal (i think is the name) best fine dining in Playa. We met a honeymoon couple there once while we were there and they had a great time. It was nice and quiet but yet in the center of Playa and had all the amenities with a great staff and personal service. They booked all of our tours and took very good care of us. We used to live in Playa for a few years and now when we go back that's were we stay. They even have a 70 foot heated lap pool, its really nice and the best place we can recommend. Check out their site and you can pick which condo you want. Regardless of where you stay Playa del Carmen is much more fun than Cancun. You don't need a car and can walk anywhere you want. Cancun is sort of like Vegas, its such a long walk to the next place and traffic and taxis is the way. Playa is laid back but yet has everything right there, loads of restaurants and shops, beautiful beaches and lots of things to do and places to go. You can tell I'm partial, but very honest.
