Day Trips Near Barcelo??

Hi there,
After much research my friend and I are booking the Barcelo Maya Colonial for week of Feb 25. This is our first trip to Mexico so bear with my complete lack of knowledge!!
Anyways, I know Barcelo is quite further south than all the main action in Playa and Cancun, but we were wondering in terms of distance and drivetime if its too far to do day trips into Playa and/or Cancun?? I've heard about these buses as well, do they run from Barcelo into town and are they really safe and only $2?
And what would be the best, most recommended and budget friendly day trips or tours to do in the area?? We would love to see some ruins and maybe the Xcaret lagoon park, and I am very intrigued by the Zipline tour! Any suggestions, past experience would be MUCH appreaciated!!
THANKS

Hi linzers and welcome

I think you made a good choice booking the Barceló as it is an awesome resort. If you haven't already, visit the Unofficial Barceló Maya website for answers to all your questions, photos and more.

The Barceló is only a 15-20 minute drive from Playa, so no problem doing an excursion into town. You can use the colectivos for 20 pesos/person each way.

You can also use the colectivos to get to Tulum and back if you want to visit some ruins.

I personally would not bother with a visit to Cancun. But if you really want to go there, I'm sure other peeps can give you the best way to do that.

Xcaret and Xel-Ha are easily done by cab (or once again by colectivo if you don't mind the walk in from the highway).

Hope this helps

1.) Tulum & Beyond
2.) Akumal-best snorkelling around.

Why just go Bar Hopping when you can go Bar Leaping?

Scroll about 3/4 of the way down.

Linzers, I can't really offer advice as I am a newbie to the area, but just wanted to say we're going in May and I'm excited to hear about what you end up doing and how you like it!
