Room location at RPDC
I just booked my honeymoon at the Royal with a Junior suite. Is it worth the extra money to get an upgrade to oceanfront, or are the regular junior suites location close enough to the water action (beach and pools)?
Now the countdown to June 23rd begins!!! |

I've always booked a ROYAL JR SUITE OCEAN VIEW (sept and Nov 07 and going again Apr 08) and been very happy with the "view". It really depends on WHERE your room is located.
go to www dot robino dot info (when I type the URL the CORRECT way, something weird happens - I get "HOME@ ..." ) and click on the picture of Royal Playa Del Carmen hotel. The room map is color coded and its a bit confusing at first. There are not a lot of elevators, basically one at the lobby-side and one at the beach-side of each building, so you want a room closer to the beach for the better view. what you CANT tell on the map is whether the rooms have hammocks on the balconies. I know for SURE that 353 does NOT. COBA Building is a non-smoking building but peeps who've stayed in the other buildings have not reported any real smoke smells. The map makes it APPEAR that things are far apart - they are NOT. My only REAL criticism of the entire hotel is that the separate pool with the swim-up bar has NO STEPS to get in, so i couldnt use it when I was there, however, the swing-bar next to the main pool is close enough, and the service around the pool for drinks is pretty good. And a $1 tip occasionally goes a long way. If you indeed have ROYAL level room, doing on-line checkin is great. It works with either your name OR your hotel reservation number (you have to get that from the hotel - its not the same as any number that might be on your travel documents. You will get a 'picture' of the hotel, and you just click on the building you want and HOPE there are rooms available. If you go at a busy time you might have to be a bit flexible about WHERE you are. When i did the checkin in Nov, I was not happy with the room, so I went BACK in and clicked on another building and found a room. I would tell you my favorite room, butomeone might take it when I go in april . |

I will be going to the Royal in July and would love to know what your favorite room is....since I won't be able to take it from you - could you send me a pm and tell me??
Also does anyone know how crowded the resort is in July? I have heard terrible reports about this resort and overbooking!! We are going with a very large group for a wedding and I hope this does not happen. Would it be better for me to go on a Sunday or Monday? Saturday is not an option. |

I would say that 355 is the best oceanview room on the nonsmoking side and 399 (the room we were in) is the best smoking room-in the Tulum wing. 399 is angled towards the beach, so it has a better view of things than the rooms that look out on the wing and pool in front of them. It doesn't have a hammock, but the view was better than a hammock for us!

399 doesn't have one, which is unfortunate, b/c I really do think it has the best view at the best angle without upgrading to oceanfront. The way it's angled keeps it from accomodating a hammock though.
