Geek Has Revelation
Greetings all, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to this fine community. I am a 27 year old canadian, I work as a graphic artist by day, run my own consulting company by night, fill in the gaps with all sorts of IT related hobbies; a professional dork.
I've always been a hardened pessimist, my cynical side dominates. This results in a depression which recently culminated in a burn out, which led to somewhat of an epiphany last week. I'm selling all my stupid crap, packing a lowly suitcase with bare essentials, and moving to Playa. I've booked my flight 2 weeks from now, i've no clue what i'll do or how i'll live once i get there, all i know is i have to get the hell out of this sky rise and snow bank infested city before i go crazy. I quit my day job today before i could come to my senses and pussy out. I'm getting rid of the 3 computers, 2 servers and the wall of LCD screens in my living room, rid of the cellphone, PDA, and asterisk box, sweetest of all; rid of anything and everything even remotely connected to networking. If i never see a freakin router again in my entire life, it'll still be too soon. I will be experiencing computers and the internet only as an end user from now on. I've never felt so good. Looking forward to exploring mexico, drinkin tequila, and making a garden, gonna grow me some corn! Anyone of you local guys the result of flipping out like me? ![]() |

When I moved in '97 it was a bit of a flip out- not as yours though. I had been to the area twice in a short time, met folks etc. and knew where I was going to stay. Also brought enough money as a back up so once there I had time to finish my diving education and look for work (all of that took me around three months).
As you are selling so many things you will surely bring some money for back up, if that weren't the case I would probably wave a little red flag like the poster before me. Before you leave DO inform yourself about the FM3s, job regulations and such if you have never done that- in the end once you start working you don't want to end up in a prison for a day and then be moved out of the country........ But I wish you good luck and fun with the move!!! Very brave to do so and keep us updated on how it goes! ![]() |

Well done! Once you're there, don't forget to let us (who all wish we could do the same thing) know just how far down the rabbit-hole goes.
(Sorry for the Matrix reference, but I didn't start it )Good Luck! |

I gotta PM James ... I think it is time this board retains a therapist.
I'd love to join you, but I have no idea what to do with a wife, two kids, two dogs, three cats, a chinchilla, a snake, a hedgehog, hampsters, hermit crabs, and whatever else the kids brought into the house today. I could really use that therapist myself! |

I'm all for changes in life. Go for it! I lived in Mexico for over 10 years and have just recently moved back to Sweden, which came as a nice change actually. During my decade in Playa I have seen a LOT of people come and go, though, make sure you're smart about holding on to your money, don't get into vacation/party mode and find a job fast (you'll probably have a few fall through before you have a dependable income). Good luck!

I like your thinking! However, you may want to think this one out in the short time frame you have set for yourself. A few years ago, I spent the day wandering downtwon PDC as the wife got a massage etc. I spent the better portion of a couple hours chatting with a guy about what it takes to move/resside in PDC/Mexico. (The guy may be on this board, so he will remain unidentified for his sake.) I had know idea what was involved, a lot more than I would have imagined. Many people on this board can give you more information, they're doing it. Just make sure you have your ducks in a row so that you can make your Mexico move more than just a long visit.

Arrived in playa yesterday evening, stress level since then has dropped dramatically. I'm staying with a friend until i can get a job and my own place. I've got lots of bar experience from my younger days and i speak 3 languages, hopefully i can snag a bartender or waiter job where i can get on my feet, till i start my own business down there.
Spent the day exploring el centro, came accros crabs, lizards, plus some pretty ****ed up birds, and i've not even been here 24 hours. I'm as enchanted with the place as i was hoping, more even. All ide seen was a buttload of pictures and some eye witness accounts from friends, glad i've no regrets so far. More to come when i actually get a job! Thanks for the support guys, this forum allowed me to see there where tons of good people in playa, and this influenced my decision greatly when i flipped out. I like risk takers and wish I had taken more in my 20's. Good on ya! However, as far as your bar experience, I didn't think non-Mexicans could get jobs in the food service industry, specifically bartenders, waiters, bar backs, etc? If they can, LET ME KNOW! I'll go learn to bartend instead of getting in English degree and ESL certification so I can teach English down there!
