very broad question
there are ruins, cenotes, the carribean, xcaret, xelha, 5th Avenue, off 5th avenue, akumal, yukatrek tours, ziplines, atv's, cozumel, isla mujeres, etc. to do.

...and Playa isn't really a shopping mecca....there are a few chain shops but no real deals.
Mostly your typical tourist shops selling souvenirs & tequila.
Oh..and bars and restaurants galore.

Hey Perry, ditto on everything that Babaloo said. That's almost the longest response I've seen from Babaloo! You can do some shopping on 5th. I know I have to suffered through it sometimes . You might have fun. As Babaloo has written before, do a "search" and you will find alot of the answers to your questions.

First time to PDC? Ya got to get away from your AI resort and check out as much as you can.

OR if you are not really familiar with the area at all and therefor don't know which keywords to use for a search- maybe outline for us what you like to do so we can give you said keywords (f.e. fishing, diving, snorkeling, ruins, nightlife, eating out............).

The way you asked your question it is really to broad to be answered as that would result in writing a travel guide online.....

When you say "designer" are you looking for something on par with say, "Gucci", or "BCBG"?
There really aren't either types of retailers; although, that is kind of the point.
