Place to buy pottery?

I'm looking for that great green-glazed pottery, but trying to avoid the super-touristy spots on 5th ave. Is there a place for some great stuff that is not so cr$$azy?

You must check out Alicia's shop, Siete Detailles at 1st Ave. & 14th. She does not have green-glazed as far as I know, but she has the highest quality pottery (Talavera) available in Playa......and the prices are resonable for this quailty work. I purchased a complete China set from her last year. I call it my wedding china even though I have been married for quite some time. She also has beautiful, inexpensive pewter-ware at her shop. Her father owns the factory where these wares are produced .....I forgot what town in Mexico it is.

Chapters, Indigo, Barnes & Noble.....eh?......oh!.....I thought you said poetry.

(Actually, I agree with Maureen. Siete Datailles is my wife's favourite store for stuff like that.)

Thanks to this forum, I visited the Detailles shop. WOW! I was really impressed. I got quite a bit of pottery (the fake stuff, which she was quick to point out the difference). I ended up with four nice pots to put plants in, a couple of real Talavera plates, some shot glasses, and a nice pewter frame. She packed everything with newspapers and bubble wrap. I was happy to get home with everything in one piece, except for one pot. (And I had everything packed in my check-in luggage!) The prices were reasonable, and she was very pleasant to deal with. She had a young boy working with her, who was a joy to meet and very happy to get a small tip for his help.
I definintely recommend this shop!

Alicia is a wonderful woman! That was probably one of her sons that helped you. The pewter in her shop is all made by another son who has a factory up in Cancun. She has 7 kids all together...thus siete detalles!

I love the Detailles shop! I always take all of my guests to her shop and come home with something of my own. All of the items in her store are made in Mexico - the Talavera from Pue, the blown glass from Jalisco and the pewter from the Cancun factory.

Please, please, please support her shop! I fear that she will close one day and I'll be left with all the crap - err - excuse me - tourist items on 5th Avenue. She told me that her daughter that still lives with her doesn't like to work in the shop and her son is too busy with the pewter to help her out any more. So now when she goes on vacation or buying trips she closes the shop. One time I was in Playa for a month and she was closed almost the whole time. Just on a lark I walked by her place on the night before I was leaving and she was there unpaking all her new things. We had a great chat and I got to buy some new things.

AND the best thing about her shop is that her prices are always the lowest in town or anywhere. I asked her about it one time and she said that she really wants people to enjoy the arts that Mexico has to offer and by not marking them up too much she can accomplish that.

I havent seen much of the green glazed stuff in Playa, but there is tons of it in Oaxaca. We came back with a lot when we visited there last year. The market is full of it, its inexpensive and makes great gifts.

Can I get talavera tiles at her place? I'm looking to tile a wall and need a variety of talavera tiles along with some solid colors and maybe trim pieces...is this the place for that?
