From an American attorney who lives in Morelia and has a solo law practice in the US.

She posted it to a Morelia yahoo list that she moderates.

What are some (many?) of the difficulties associated with such a move? I would imagine some cultural / attitudinal shifts and procedural perceptions would be first on the list. Just curious and thanks in advance for any replies...

Oh, I come up with all kinds of stuff.

Like this 5 bedroom, 5 bath home in Merida for $97,000

What would one do with all that room other than host house parties like the nobility in Great Britain used to have.

Would have to install a pool first, though

Thanks for this. I just filled it out.

Biggest problem for me by several miles is the inordinately complicated and non-responsive bureaucratic system when it comes to visas and naturalization. Just for a quick example, I was first of all told to get the wrong type of visa all along, had the usual amazing problems every year renewing it (despite the position and employer not changing), then applied for naturalization after having had that type of visa for 5 years, then months later had my application initially rejected because then they decided that requirement was not sufficient...

And of course most migrants are not going to be fluent Spanish speakers married to Mexicans who can help them with all these processes.

Steve, those are pretty much the two main comments I added, as well - immigration is so impossible to deal with, and an English translation of requirements might make it somewhat less ridiculous.

That is great to know. From my reading, the state you are in may be among the most difficult in regard to the immigration office.

The immigration office here is a disaster. Speaking Spanish and being married to a Mexican offer little help. Medicare coverage here would be fantastic.

Well that may be, though that bad initial info I got was from the Cancun office and the naturalization issue is a different dept of the govt altogether, Relaciones Exteriores (in my case, in Mexico City). So I couldn't go too far in isolating the problem, myself.

so what's the objective?

do they want to make it easier to move to Mexico, or do they think perhaps there aren't enough impediments?

"Oh no, another gringo got in - how did THAT happen? We need to fire someone!"
Seriously, I hope that it will become a simpler process before I get there . . . someday. Hopefully someday sooner rather than later.

Chicos...a woman's clothing store out of South Florida did their spring catalong photo shoot in Merida. They used some of the newly renovated vintage homes.
There was also a picture of some of the flora and fauna that really inspired me to paint it and so I did!
You may be on to something with Merida....go for it Roni!

Kinda interesting that towards the end of the questionaire, the Canadian perspective sort of diappeared.
I would find it difficult to compare as a Candian - the Mexico experience to the US examples when I have never expereinced the American system. Guess you just guess????

Hmmmmmm

We liked the short visit we had there in December 2006. This coming December we will spend a week there. If we are still feeling kindly towards it, we'll go back in an April/May/June time frame in 2010 and see what we think of the heat.

Who knows what will happen in future years. Looks like I'll be able to stop working full time in late 2010 to mid 2011. We'll see.
