Just got a brochure in the mail. Our original plan was to spend about a week at Highland Lakes, and then another week or so on the North Carolina coast. Kitty Hawk, Cape Hatteras, and like that, This brochure shows there are over 60 wineries in North Carolina, over 20 in an area called the Yadkin Valley alone. We may not even make it to the coast. We could hurt ourselves. We've only sampled three North Carolina wines so far, all from the winery at the Biltmore estates in Asheville. One of the reds was quite drinkable, the other was best used for removing road tar, and the white was marginal. We're willing to give all these other contenders and pretenders an opportunity to impress us though. Anybody had any experience with traveling the wine trails of North Carolina?

Had neighbors who did a one day organized tour through the Yadkin Valley, they enjoyed it. Although they said the wine experience was inconsistant. They're in Italy at the moment, when they get back I'll forward you the details.

Thanks large. I know we'll be seeing you in Flat Rock, but we'll have to see if we can manage to hook up in your town for a libation at some point. I'm sure we can find where some neighbourhood kids have set up a lemonade stand. We're in Charlotte one night on the way down, and likely another on the way home. We're thinkin' probably Manzetti's both ways.

Hey Bump!
Rockhouse Vineyards is just down the mountain from us in Tryon..always wanted to go there...we should try to check that out together while you are here...there are a few more in the area, but we are just now getting better at growing grapes around here... Shelton would be another great one to go to, but is a couple of hours away in the Yadkin Valley area and might be worth a tour as Ray has suggested...Check here Here is another link for your exploration...... Hi, Bob
Just so happens that we went to the Rockhouse Vineyard this past weekend. We had met Lee Griffin at an event recently and told him our son was very interested in wines. He said to bring him to the vineyard and he'd do a barrel tasting. Couldn't make it happen when our son was here, so went last weekend. Lee took us into the barrel room, but they got really busy and we agreed to postpone the barrel tasting. BUT... the wines we tasted in the tasting room were spectacular (BTW, I know nothing about wines). There are others in the Tryon area, and we hope to visit them soon. |
