Venezuela and Ecuador vs. Colombia- this might get nasty......
I don't know if anyone followed the events between the three countries recently....... HERE is an article about what happened.
In short Colombia (seen by Venezuelas president as an ally of the US) pursued rebels on Ecuadorian soil via an airattack without asking for permission beforehand- they killed them in an airraid, about 1.8 km into Ecuadorian territory. Venezuela and Ecuador responded with movement of troops to the boarders and expelling of Colombian diplomats. Given the different political stances this may get nasty.............although I agree with the articles that I read so far that there will be no full blown war, I am quite sure there will be tension for some time. |

I have been watching the ever increasing flow of arms to the area, provided primarily by the US and Russia, with growing alarm for some time now.
I certainly hope that things will be resolved without further bloodshed. |

Unfortunately that US can't stay out of it or any latin american politics for that matter. The attack was probably paid for by the billions of dollars that the US is providing Colombia for "Plan Colombia" which they insist based purely on drugs, although it would seem more like they are doing it to protect their interests in that region from capture or attack by the guerillas.
Were the Guerillas of Colombian nationality? and if so I wonder if they could have extradited. The Colombian government is really in a tough place because alot of the Farc's movements are in areas where there is not alot of infastructure. That being said I hope this can be resolved calmly, although I highly doubt it knowing what's happened in the past. Last edited by mofi; 03-03-2008 at 03:10 PM.. |

After I saw this post, I decided to ask my boyfriend what he had heard from his family and what he thought about the whole situation. Well what is being reported here is much different then what is being reported in Colombia.
In Colombia, it's being said that the American government ordered the colombian government to take out this guy. According to my boyfriend Raul Reyes is the second most powerful person in the FARC at the current time, and he says that things in Colombia are going to get really ugly really fast without Ecuador and Venezuela getting involved. |
