The only reason I care that he is a marine (I bet facing discipline now) is that he is supposed to be representing the US in a foreign country.

Otherwise, I would say you will find this kind of idiot in any profession. Say, pro-football for instance.

Sol, I think it's quite the opposite. Every time I turn on the news (European channels), I only see more and more violence. To the point that if I happen to turn on the tv when the news has already started, I sometimes wonder if it's real footage or the movies. I think the media should ban certain images during daytime shows, not to lessen their horror or importance, but to give it the right weight. If we see the same violence day after day, sadly, we get used to it. I remember the first time I saw people quarrel on tv. It was a political debate, and one of the men just stood up, shouted to the other, and left the studio. Everyone was in shock, and it was only about 15 years ago. Now, it's what you see every day on tv.

It reminds me of the news during the Vietnam war. All that was featured were the body counts and some scenes with soldiers and civilians. It was not until that little Vietnamese girl who had napalm burning her back did the US public see a fraction of what was really happening.

If someone assaulted my kids, it's a whole other level.

Where did I say that there are NOT different levels of wrong?
What I stated was that imho it is not right to compare them to make one seem less wrong or more wrong. You will always find something that is more wrong/ sad/ horrible or what have you in any given situation. That doesn't make the original incident lose any of it's wrongness/ sadness/ horror.
So what you just wrote is not really related to what I said.

As for seeing things in perspective- that is exactly why I wrote that I do not agree with some folks on sites saying they want to see him dead and why I said it should dealt with accordingly.

The other discussion about how everything is relative...I can your point Joana, but also UGAPlaya's...perspective is important.
I recall another board where there was a discussion between women about miscarriages...one woman said that a woman having a miscarrriage at 4 weeks is just as devastating as a woman losing a baby at nine months; that 'you cannot measure whose pain is greater'...well, that may be a tough call, but I think any reasonable person can make an objective statement that yes, the former is not as great a tragedy as the latter.
So if I were told I had Type 2 diabetes would I be as devastated as if you told me I had Stage 4 cancer? Of course not.
Can't agree with the two examples you gave- as one always has to take in account the personality of the person involved.
Maybe the woman who was pregnant for four weeks before her miscarriage has wanted a baby for a long long time- in that case it won't matter to her if she didn't feel it kicking in her womb etc..
Same goes for deseases- of course there are those that are worse than others- as in your example. BUT that doesn't lessen the impact it has on the given patients life and the things he has to deal with.
Example: right now I am dealing with a number of patients who had toes amputated. They can still walk etc.- but they are devastated. Would it be right if I told them to quit the whining and take a walk over to the oncology to get perspective? No, right? That would mean that I belittle their feelings.

The people who feel strongly about this incident are surely aware that there are bigger evils out there- that still doesn't make the story less sad or take away the right to be upset about it.

The Germans, the British, etc. They all have bad eggs like this in their military. God bless our soldiers, even the ones who don't like dogs. :-)
Sure we do- I even mentioned one of the incidents which involved German soldiers.
Again: that there are many wrongs out there doesn't make them less wrong, imho. That reminds me of the stance some took in the discussion about waterboarding- "the other side is torturing a lot worse than we are, so a little waterboarding can't hurt". But that the other side is doing it doesn't make it right or less wrong either.
To take it to a big level: the holocaust doesn't get less wrong by pointing out Russian death camps or the death camps of the Red Khmer. They are all wrong.

You're right! I am much more upset about the puppy.

I think people tend to get a little more upset when animals are abused because they cannot defend themselves they way a person can. Yes, there are eceptions to this. Kids cannot defend themselves the way most adults can, bears can defend themselves better then puppies.

I think this is HORRIBLE what he did and I believe that he should be punished, but we have seen more coverage over this then the soldiers that get killed everday
I wouldn't be surprised that it was terrorist soldiers dressed in US. Marine uniforms trying to stir up emotions against the US, Marines.
