Gran Porto Real Trip Report 2/27-3/5 2008

Really wish I had been better prepared for arrival at Cancun airport and immigration(several drinks on plane would have helped). But alas we were on Spirit Airlines, the airline that charges you ($10 w/coupon $20 without )for each checked bag so I had already used up my in-flight drink allowance . Anyway, off to Playa del Carmen and the Gran Porto Real. Beautiful hotel, very large Jr Suite Oceanview, we had 3 adults in our room but there was room for 4. We did move the tables at end of beds against opposite wall to hold our suitcases. You also have a huge bathroom but the lighting leaves a lot to be desired. We were off to the pool to relax and enjoy a few drinks. If you have an aversion to children then you might not want to stay here. We didn't have a problem but.......... OKAY, off to the beach where the sandbags line the shoreline in front of GPR. If you cross Constituyentes and go to beach of The Royal there are no sandbags all the way North to Grand Coco Bay. Also no sandbags South past GPR to ferry dock, past ferry dock no beach whatsoever but I don't know for how far or what properties are there. All in all, the GPR had excellent food and awsome service staff. I am going to try to put some pcs on, please bear with me.

Did you have a good experience with Spirit Airlines? They have specials to CUN out of Atlanta every now and again.

Is there internet available in the rooms? I have a laptop.
Do we need to bring any cables? Is there a fee?

Kevin y Pam,

We've flown Spirit out of Atlanta to Las Vegas a couple of times this year, and to Orlando last month. They offered some really cheap deals ($55 roundtrip) to Las Vegas, so I couldn't pass them up. We had NO issues with Spirit....just like flying anyone else, except you do have to pay for your luggage. If you go on line and pay in advance, it's $10 per bag. If you wait to do it at the ticket counter at check-in time, it's $20 per bag.

I haven't flown them outside of the country yet, so I can't comment on that.

Just learned Spirit flies out of an airport two hours away. Are they really bad? Don't mind nickel and diming as long as I'm directing.

Spirit is a no frills airline with a charge for all checked luggage. It got us from Tampa, Fl to Ft Lauderdale, Fl(their hub) to Cancun in a little over 3 hrs airtime. Leg room was same as all planes. Our experience was good but I'm sure there are others out there that will not agree.

I think wi fi was available in the lobby area but don't know about in the rooms. Guests were in the lobby sitting on couches or chairs with their laptops on coffee tables doing whatever with their computers.
