"Left And Leaving"

My city's still breathing (but barely it's true)
through buildings gone missing like teeth.

The sidewalks are watching me think about you,
sparkled with broken glass.

I'm back with scars to show.
Back with the streets I know.
Will never take me anywhere but here.

The stain in the carpet, this drink in my hand,
the strangers whose faces I know.
We meet here for our dress-rehearsal to say "I wanted it this way"
wait for the year to drown.

Spring forward, fall back down.
I'm trying not to wonder where you are.
All this time lingers, undefined.

Someone choose who's left and who's leaving.
Memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me:
a blanket, some matches, this pain in my chest,
the best parts of Lonely, duct-tape and soldered wires,
new words for old desires,
and every birthday card I threw away.

I wait in 4/4 time.
Count yellow highway lines that you're relying on to lead you home.

The Knife by Genesis
Lead Singer - Peter Gabriel
Drums - Phil Collins (I think he was a better drummer than singer)

Genesis had one of the best stage shows of the early 70's (pre MTV).

One of my favorite songs of all time

I don't think it's really a love song.
It's kind of progressive - metal.

1977 - Genesis post Peter Gabriel
Wind & Wuthering - Your Own Special Way

I saw them in concert during this tour at the Forum in LA.
Chester Thompson on drums (I later worked with his son).
First tour where they did the dueling drums.

This video is from a performance on the Mike Douglas show.
Phil looks baked.

A couple of Oldies but Goodies

Moon River (Classic love song)
YouTube - Moon river/ Audrey Hepburn
Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.

Let's Get it on
Mavin Gaye

YouTube - Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On live in Montreux 1980
