Body Piercings and the TSA
Interesting article HERE. I think that's kind of cruel and unusual myself. Ouch.

That really sucks. I have a total of 8 piercings, and was worried about the metal detectors when we left on our vacation. nothing went off, though. I think it sounds weird that they went off on her, and then was made to take them out. Someone with ear rings wouldn't be made to take them out....

I hope those $#@*'s get their asses fired!
![]() I can imagine my 18 y/o daughter, who just happened to get her belly button pierced last week, being subjected to that. She would probably die of embarassment, literally! I would be ready to kill someone I can tell you that much. Last edited by travmagic; 03-28-2008 at 01:18 PM.. |

I thought the rule was to remove the metal jewelry (I have had to put my earrings in the dish and send them through) OR be subject to a same gender inspection. What happened to option #2? Have they said?
edit: just reread... they kind of skirted that issue... about the pat down option Last edited by SunKneeMarie; 03-28-2008 at 01:26 PM.. |

Geesh! That is ridiculous! I disagree that the TSA's did nothing wrong! How could an investigation possibly say that they followed procedure? I have hardware in my knee, which I obviously wouldn't be able to remove, and I've always been treated very respectfully. A female agent wands me and does a pat down. It's no big deal and they barely touch you at all.
One of the people I travel with has a nipple ring. As far as I know he has never set off the metal detector. |

I've never taken off earrings to go through the inspection. In fact, I don't think I've ever removed anything but my shoes. They allow you to pass through if an underwire bra sets things off... why not a piercing ring?

I had a big metal jangly pair of earrings one time... I can't remember if I beeped or if I took them out just to be precautionary... I HATE to beep the thing...

I make it a habit now to not where any jewelry to the airport. I usually put it on when I'm about to land. Also, I wear slip off shoes as well. I'd hate to be that person that holds up the line.
![]() But again, in the case of body piercings...this woman was treated horribly. |

Awful.
These screeners should be fired immediately, especially for treating her with disrespect. They must have had the walk through detector set way too low for it only pick up a couple of small body jewelry pieces. ![]() I was an airport screener for a few years...long before 9/11 though, but our rules up here haven't changed since then much- if you were being wanded and beeped in the nipple region, you'd say 'oh, my nipple ring', and that would be that. If your top was really bulky, then you might have to acquiesce to a private pat down- and we were trained to avoid the breast of course, just check and see if there is a weapon in there. duh It seems like since 9/11 there has been this resulting huge paranoia that results in a huge lack of common sense.
