Got something for you since I just received the monthly Orca-newsletter (I have 'adopted' an Orca 3 years ago and been renewing this ever since - so I get monthly emails with news about the Orca-pods from the Whale Museum on San Juan Island). Hope you will see lots of the Orcas! Happy Anniversary!
J POD… just when we think we’ll hear nothing for March…. Brad Hanson from NOAA NWFS - Report from the NOAA Ship McArthur II: “Weather chased us in to the Straits of Juan de Fuca last Sat night, March 22nd, so we waited there for a couple days rather than go home and it did pay off early Tues AM when we picked up J pod inbound off Neah Bay on the towed array. They turned NW near the Sekiu River and we followed them over to near Port Renfrew and then west to Pachena Pt. - rain and wind came up, we lost visual, they apparently went quiet and we lost them - went to Cape Beal before we had to turn for home so their secret of where they go in the open ocean is still safe with them.” Transients in Haro Strait - late in March, transients were spotted at Discovery Island heading east toward San Juan Island. They made a turn, heading up Haro Strait, at one point turning toward the direction of Lime Kiln Lighthouse. Then they turned again heading north, northwest. There were three small groups at one point, then it seemed some of them met up and continued on their way. A storm blew in making it difficult to see them as they passed by. Even though only their blows could be seen, as they surfaced to breathe, it offered the excitement of knowing that J Pod will soon return. |

What a nice day!!
Hiking, seeing neat stuff, eating good food, making good food, an almost perfect day. Tomorrow we take the ferry to Friday Harbor for lunch at the Backdoor Cafe - colleague's son used to cook there. More later |
