Roni and Kathy's 30th - An Anniversary Trip and Pre-Trip Report
Left work yesterday with the knowledge that I would not be back until Thursday. The Anniversary Vacation had started. Now we are not big celebrants or spenders, but this one is going to be fun. Tomorrow morn we head to Anacortes, WA to catch the ferry to Lopez Island where will we stay in a wee cabin in the woods for 3 nights.
Preparation for the trip This morning we had coffee with a little fire in the fireplace ![]() Then we went down to our favorite Italian grocery in Portland (Viviano's in St. Louis is way bigger and better), and bought some cheese, meat, wine and pickled asparagus spears. Cheeses: Morbier Affine Lait Cru, Pyrenees Poivre Vert and Chipotle Cheddar Meat: Prosciutto di Parma and Jamon Serrano Wine - A Spanish blend of 85% tempranillo, 10% cab and 5% syrah. On the way home we stopped at Pepita's Cantina for some lunch. We had chips and salsa, a beer each ![]() Kathy had some chicken thing that was very good, and I had huevos rancheros. This week Kathy had a lesson on how to say corn tortillas and flour tortillas in Spanish. When the very cute waitgirl asked Kathy in Spanish if she wanted tortillas de maiz o hariña, Kathy replied, in English, flour please. I was so proud ![]()

Thanks Tesla,
I am off to the more local store to get some olives (they were way freaking expensive at Pastaworks ) and something to make a Bloody Maria or two with up on the islands. Picked up some Sauza Commemorativo on the way home also - the Canadian crew were talking about Tequila prices last night on some thread- the cost here for the fifth I bought was $26.Had to buy the tequila and bloody maria supplies so we had a good use for the pickled asparagus spears ![]() ![]() Tomorrow evening after arrival, even though it is not a Wednesday, it might be business time. |

One fun thing we will be doing in the cozy cabin in the woods is kinda putting a little more flesh on our life map for the next 3 years. I know this can be a dangerous exercise as it may tempt fate to radically change things, but the place we think that is likely to take us is at least 6 months or so trying out the Yucatan Peninsula for size We are kind of liking the notion of Mérida these days - only about 4-5 hours from one of your favorite vacation destinations. In fact, the reason we chose the particular wine we did was because it was blended and bottled in Mérida, Spain ![]() Veremos amigo, veremos. |

![]() ![]() ![]() What a great start. Have a wonderful trip. I am so happy that you both will have a great get-away. ![]() The San Juans are beautiful this time of the year. I seem to remember that there were lots of foxgloves and yarrows blooming in April ![]() Even though we went to Orca Island (amongst other islands, we never saw orcas or whales. Whilst on the ferry, I did see a deer swimming from one island to another. That was really a strange sight.
