Once Upon a Time in Mexico - A Trip Report
Okay, I think it’s time to start my trip report; it’s been two weeks since we got back home but this isn’t an easy task for me.
Someone has said that writing in a foreign language takes away 20 percent of your intelligence – in my case it must be closer to 80![]() Prepositions specially seem to be my stumbling stone…feel free to edit if I pick the wrong one and my choice dramatically changes the meaning of the sentence ![]() Also I’ve been reading so many great trip reports and seen so many outstanding pictures that I was afraid I couldn’t add anything new to it but this is how WE saw it… Day 1 – Day of The Half Dead Our trip began on March 2nd. We had packed our luggage the night before and I was sure I couldn’t get any sleep but I did . We woke up at 2.30 am, made some coffee and I did the final check with our luggage; two suitcases, one big and one smaller, a purse for me and a backpack for hubby. We called a taxi at 3am to take us at the airport. It’s a 30min ride and our flight was leaving at 6.05 am so we were not in a hurry, but it had been snowing during the night so I thought the road might be slippery.![]() When we were seated in the taxi, hubby started to feel his pockets –Oh, I left my wallet, just a second, I’ll go and get it! ![]() Ok, we have plenty of time, and while you are in, please check everything just one more time! Then he comes back WITH the wallet and off we go! We were both a bit sleepy so we didn’t chat much, just stared out of the window. We were almost at the airport when hubby finally spoke…”where’s the backpack?” WHAT?![]() You didn’t take it? And you went back in to get your wallet and I asked you to look around one more time? Ok, don’t panic…quick inventory; in the backpack there was our bigger camera, sunglasses, medicines…should we go back? EEEK! This cannot happen to me! I wanted to strangle him but there was no time – later…what should we do??? We can’t leave it behind, that’s for sure! Suddenly the taxi driver started to talk; he suggested that one of us should go to the airport to check in the luggage while the other gets the backpack…yes of course! What a clever man! So I went to the airport with the luggage and hubby headed back home with the taxi…at that point I knew that “Mr. Murphy” would be traveling with us as a third wheel.![]() Well, he made it back in time with the backpack and we still had time to relax and have couple of well-deserved drinks before departure. ![]() After eight hours flight (which was literally pain in the a**) we made a 40min “pit stop” at Halifax. I had red somewhere that there was a smoking booth in the transit hall where they took us– well the booth was still there but it was papered with the non-smoking signs. ![]() Hubby was not very pleased and I could see how the little muscle in his jaw started to twitch so I quickly moved towards the line in front of the little bar and got us a couple of beers. not-so-happy hubby at the Transit Hall in Halifax ![]() Five more hours and we were finally approaching Cancun!!! We landed around 12.30 pm We got our luggage and we walked towards the traffic lights; I had a bad feeling about this so I made hubby press the button and naturally the red light went on! The officer told us to put our luggage on the table and open them, and then she quickly looked inside. ![]() Our tour-operator guide waited us outside the airport and showed us the way to the bus. I stopped and bought us four beers 50pesos each! What? Are we still in Finland? ![]() ![]() We had to wait almost an hour before all the people and the guide were in the bus but finally we were on our way towards Playa! ![]() to be continued... |

What a fun report!!! You're English is excellent- it is my native language and I haven't had the patience to write a trip report, yet, so I'm really impressed by the time you took to write this

Day 1 – Day of The Half Dead continuing

Sort of...First stop was at Real Playa del Carmen – those who stayed there stepped out of the bus, got their luggage and went in, and the guide followed them “in case someone needs help”. Ok, finally we moved on – next stop was at Carmen Inn and the same thing happened again – ![]() then to the Gran Porto Real/The Royal where we ALL stepped out of the bus and waited while our guide called us a van to take the rest of us to “down town”. The van dropped us at the corner of 10th ave and 4th and from there we walked to our hotel Mimi del Mar.It’s located literally on the beach (there’s no street entrance) and right next door to Bad Boys! ![]() Mimi del Mar is a very nice little hotel, 18 rooms in total. Our room was clean and spacious and there was a nice view from the balcony. ![]() ![]() We had a kitchenette with a sink, stove with two burners, a coffee maker, a blender and fridge. We also had a statue of Madonna ![]() We quickly unpacked changed and headed out. We walked as far as the Fusion, and ordered our first PLAYA drinks. I had Mojito and hubby had a shot of Tequila. I finally started to realize that I was really there, sitting on the beach, my toes in a sand and in front of me was the beautiful Caribean Sea...oh, I was waited so long to see that amazing color! ![]() First drinks at Fusion ![]() It started to get dark so we finished our drinks and walked up to fift. It was funny to see all the “familiar” places I had seen in the trip reports. We had dinner at HC, Arrachera Nacional of course and it was delicious! At this point we had been up for more than 20 hours but it was still early in Playa time so we decided to walk around a bit. We went back to fift and hubby spotted the sign that said “Bourbon Street” –yeah, my kind of place! So we sat down, had a couple of beers and just watched people go by. Bourbon Street ![]() I was so tired that I started to feel a bit dizzy so we headed back to the hotel and fell to that stone hard mexican bed (actually, while it felt a bit odd at first, we slept very well in it)
