Experiences with Spirit Air?
We're shopping for airline tickets from Atlanta-Cancun in early June. I just noticed the other day that Spirit has very good prices, but when we started reading about them on TripAdvisor, we found a lot of negative comments about them and not too many positive ones. Does anybody have any experiences with them, good or bad?

We got 2 RT tickets to Cancun for $520 out of Boston. That includes taxes. We found out AFTER we booked that you have to pay $10/way/bag to check your luggage We take that as a challenge- we'll be packing light My bad for not checking that first- never occurred to me....... |

I flew out of Detroit last year with Spirit. They do charge ten bucks for your luggage, and they lost everyone who was on a connecting flight's luggage at the Cancun airport. We had to wait in a small line and fill out a form. The luggage was delivered to our hotel, probably 2-3 hours later. No biggie. They do have cheap prices.

Dan-O,
I"ve flown SpiritAir to Las Vegas a couple of times out of Atlanta, and once to Orlando. I've had no issues with them. I used to complain about their luggage fee, but now it looks like all of the airlines are going to charge some type of fee. One tip, at least this was valid for the last couple of months, you could log into the SpiritAir site and only have to pay $10 per suitcase, as compared to paying $20 per suitcase at the ticket counter. i haven't heard of any crashes with Spirit Air
that's a good thing and that qualifies them to be my carrier What could the negatives be? Lost luggage? Rude attendants? Late or canceled departures? That kinda defines most airlines nowadays |

We flew Spirit to Cancun Feb/Mar. 2008. We left from Tampa, Fl with plane change at their hub in Ft Lauderdale and onto Cancun. The plane is as comfortable
as any other, there were no problems with flight times. Just remember to get your discount voucher online for your $10 checked luggage fee or they will charge you $20 each checked bag. |

I flew them from Cancun to Orlando in January. The flights were fine, attendants were fine, planes were fine. However, their gate area in Ft Lauderdale was a freakin' ZOO! Don't plan on picking up a snack there (or having a potty break!
) as lines were at least half an hour long. Gate areas are packed solid with people and they had issues changing everyone's gates when I was there so people were shoving themselves through trying to get to where they needed to be and confusion reigned. Otherwise, they are well worth the cheaper prices. |

Thanks for the replies. My wife found a good deal on Aeromexico- nonstop ATL-CUN tickets so she bought them. She's afraind prices are going to keep going up and she's probably right.
Most of the complaints about Spirit on TripAdvisor had to do with missed or cancelled connecting flights and overall customer service, or lack of it. Since we would be connecting in Miami, we would run that risk, however small that might be. I would like to try them in the future, they sure have good prices. You can't beat Aeromexico, though. They serve food and FREE drinks! ![]() BTW: we paid about $2,600.00 for all 4 of us- no, flying ain't cheap anymore! Last edited by Dan-0 : 04-02-2008 at 09:06 PM. |

Twice inthe last couple of years we've booked a non-stop from Detroit to CUN only to have Spirit e-mail us at a later date that we would then have a one-stop, with a lengthy layover. Unfortunately, their price is hard to beat, even with the luggage fee, and we're flying them again in May.

I'm going Spirit too - from Detroit. After reading all the reviews, I'm just hoping that I don't get bumped from non-stop to a layover in Ft. Lauderdale. It seems like this airport is the cause of much of the frustration with Spirit flights. Oh yeah, I hope thay can keep their planes in the air for another 10 days too - as long as I get to Mexico, I'm happy. A delay in returning home would be no problem at all!
