Questions about Grand Mayan
I am staying at the Grand Mayan in May. I searched the site for info on this resort, but there is not a lot - perhaps because it is a timeshare property? I didn't choose the resort, just tagging along on someone else's selection!
I have read up about the resort on Trip Advisor, but I am curious if anyone on this site has stayed there and can give me their perspective. I know the resort is huge and we will either be doing alot of walking or taking the resort shuttle. I am curious as to how you found was the easiest way to get to Playa. Did you take a taxi or the public transport? Also, can you tell me about the restaurants on the property, particularly Tramonto (the "fancy" restaurant)? Thanks! |

Hi Ridee - Welcome! Good to hear from someone else going to the Grand Mayan! When you are going? Another member, Munichchick, has stayed at the Mayan Palace and is going to the Grand Mayan early May about two weeks before me. I hope to get some good info from her when she gets back!
There are lots of reviews of the Grand Mayan on Trip Advisor. That is where I have gotten most of my info about this resort. The most recent reviews have been very positive, which is encouraging! I can't get a good feel for food prices because food cost is so subjective. And, yes, they do provide a shuttle to Playa for $4 roundtrip. We will definitely go into Playa numerous times and plan to go to Tulum and Xcaret. When we are not using the resort shuttle, we are planning to use the public transporation (Collectivo vans and ADO vans). |

Wy wife and I stayed at Grand Mayan in January of 2007, she won the trip from a contest at her work. To put it simply, We are leaving tomorrow to stay for our first week of the Time Share we purchased while we were there. While we were there, there was alot of construction going on, we will see what has been completed since then. The Grand Mayan is VERY nice. Every room has a small private pool on their patio. We purchased for MAyan Palace, same resort and ammenities, difference is the rooms and some special extras for Grand. They did not have the shuttle last time we were there, so we took a cab to Playa a couple of times.
By the way, we are form Kansas City also, we are on the Kansas side though. We did not think the food was too expensive, considering you are on a resort...If you choose to stay at the resort all day, you can, or now with a cheap shuttle, Playa is easy to get to. The POOL is AMAZING....right next to the beach, 2 bars in the pool...If you have young ones with you, there are a lot of kids activities every day. Any other questions, just email me at bmonty72@yahoo.com. I will be there from April 25th to May 2nd. I write post again after we get back!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

WOO HOO! I am so glad to hear from someone who has been there! Since we live in the same area, I am glad to hear your thoughts on the food prices because I am sure the comments would be different from someone in CA vs someone in NY vs someone in a small town in Iowa!
Have a GREAT time and I will be looking forward to hearing from you when you get back! |

The most recent review in Trip Advisor said the Mexican fiesta was $60 a person. Here is a quote from that review about the restaurants:
"Restaurants: All of them are very nice and the food is great. I highly recommend the Mexican Fiesta night, which is on Thursday's, for $60.00/person the show and dinner are well worth it. All in all the prices are not much more than a mid-priced restaurant in the states with entrees ranging from $12 - $25." |

Hope I can help you on the Grand Mayan. We are arriving on May 9 for a week. We were there last year for 2 weeks with 2 couples from NC and really enjoyed it. Expensive? We didn't feel the restaurants were any more than those in the States...its a resort with excellent service and prices reflect that level of service. The best meals were at Tromonto and one of our guests said the steak was the best he'd ever had. We ate there 3 times last year. Take advantage of happy hours and the daily specials while you're enjoying the fabulous pool areas. You'll read on Trip Advisor about the walking if you're staying in the Grand Mayan section but you're on vacation, enjoy the stroll or take the shuttle service. The sandwiches and pool snacks are so good and can be easily split between 2 adults. We shopped at WalMart and bought breakfast foods and appetizer products for our own happy hours on the balcony. Our friends have stayed in resorts all over the world and said the Grand Mayan was the most beautiful place they have ever stayed in.

Love the Mayan Palace just something different that staying in town which we both like better. The pool is amazing the food is wonderful Havana Moon restraunt on the beach was our favourite great brakfast lunch and dinner and ,live music at night, great place to dance. The Tramont has high end food but the restraunt is very very nice and the food is excellent. They use to have a Prime Rib night and a Lobster night but that could change from year to year. The buffetts are a little pricey but we are not buffet people ,and there are other choices for breakfast. The grocery store is a bit pricey but love the fact you can buy sandwiches and salad and take it to the pool and have lunch there. The service is excellent and the 3 pool bars make for lots of fun.....a bar crawl threw the water.... We have been to other Mayan resorts but this one is our favourite. A taxi last year was $20 and you can have 4 in the cab so not a bad price. Also take the shuttel up to the main gate cross the highway ( be very careful) and get a collectivo for $1.50
Hope you have a great vacation. |
