Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore.....
Ok, just another reason I should NOT be living in Mississippi!!! I almost got blown away in a Tornado today. And I'm not kidding! I knew there was a severe weather watch but I figured I had enough time to take some lunch to my son. So I started on my way, got on the interstate, looked north and it was black!! Looked south and it was clear. Good, I'm going south! Not 2 minutes into my drive and I am in the middle of a tornado! I thought my car was going to tip over. Everyone is trying to get off the interstate. I snugged up next to the concreat wall to prevent being hit by flying billboards, trees signs etc.... and made my way off the next exit. As soon as I could I pulled up under the overpass and just waited. Objects were still hitting my car so I pulled along side the concrete pilon to block some of the wind. As soon as I did, the mangled Exxon sign landed right behind me where my car was just sitting. People were getting out of their car and running up underneath the bridge. I was staying put. Just shows you that I am not experienced at tornados. Everyone I've talked to said that is the safest place to be. I think I was even more scared than when our plane was going down!!! It didn't last long, although it seemed like an eternity. I called Adam and told him I wasn't going to make it. He was tracking the tornado and said it touched down not far from our house. It took me about an hour to go less than 5 miles. Trees where down and blocking a lot of the streets and a lot of them where now embedded in the roofs of some very nice houses. Now can I move back to Florida?? Give me a hurricane anyday, at least you know it's coming so you can prepare! Jeeezzeee!!!!

Doris ~ SO glad that you are OK. Tornados are awful, and I do agree that at least with a hurricane you have time to prepare. We got quite a few tornados when I lived up in Connecticut, and they were really bad in that most of the time there was NO warning....just ZAP! and they'd hit something. Lots of roofs ripped off houses and apartment buildings in our area. During one bad storm, a tornado ripped the roof off a historical 1700s church in the city of Hartford ~ about a block away from where I worked.
The worst tornado damage we had while I was in Connecticut was the Windsor Locks tornado which stayed on the ground for about 3 or 4 miles and almost took out the terminal at Bradley International Airport. A plane that was landing at the time narrowly escaped being drawn into the funnel. The tornado caused an enormous amount of damage with buildings literally blown away, trees snapped off and power poles and lines down everywhere. It overturned a number of tractor trailers on the road by the airport. I lived JUST up the road from the tornado's path and luckily didn't have any damage, but our yard was littered with aluminum siding and other debris. It took me 5-1/2 hours to get home that day from work because of the incredible mess. On our recent driving trip, Mike and I saw the path a tornado had taken along both sides of I-80 between Nashville and Memphis (BIG trees snapped off almost at ground level and other trees completely de-barked) and were wondering what it would be like to be on the highway and have to get out of the path of a tornado. There weren't ANY overpasses for shelter, so it would have been dangerous and scary. Anyway, GLAD that you are OK! Last edited by JoanieBlon : 04-05-2008 at 02:56 PM. |

So glad you are okay! I would have gone into the fetal position in some gully ... for some reason tornadoes are my special "freakout" thing.
We're going to be driving through "tornado alley" in a week, looking at colleges; I hope the weather cooperates! |

I tried to call Angie (Rackburt - my new found friend that I met on this forum) yesterday to see if her and her family were ok, but I haven't heard from her. She is not that far from me and I think the tornado was headed in her direction. So Angie if you see this.......CALL ME!!! I'm worried about you!!!

WOW!
Doris I'm so glad you're safe!!! Since I've been living in central TX, I've only been close to one, but that was scary enough! I think you really did the right thing by staying in your car under the overpass. With all that debris flying, I'm not sure of the logic of getting out of the car. Then again, maybe logic doesn't rule in these situations! |

Crazy Scary!!
Happy to know that you made it through safely! We have tornados here quite frequently in Wisconsin (even had a freakish one touch down this past January). I don't have a basement in my current home, and I'll admit I do a bit of a freakout when the warnings sound. I do have an interior crawlspace that I used once. Another time I showed up on a friend's doorstep with both kitties in tow! ![]() |
