Great trip report keep it coming!

Is it because I mentioned that the average Mexican family could not afford to stay in the luxury hotels in Playa or Cancun?

![]() ![]() Of all the white things to compare yourself to! My husband usually says he's so white he's actually blue, but "Whiter than cheese" is one I've never heard before and made me laugh out loud.Oh, and the free cigs...I only like to smoke when I drink, so AI + AI cigs= vacation paradise. I'm now moving on to part dos.

OK, so you were in Guayabitos in March, it's almost time for you to leave for playa and you are only at day 2 of this trip report. You are in trouble my friend. Homework is really piling up on you.
Just as an aside, we will be staying at a Bed and Breakfast in Guayabitos next year (Feb./Mar.) for 9 nights befor moving on to PV. We got this place for less than US $100.00 a night and it is right on the beach. |

Just so you know, and are prepared IF you have never been to the PV area before- the beaches in this area are not at all like the Mayan Riviera beaches. Golden or brown sand as opposed to white sand, and therefore the water does not look as clear in some areas. It's not that the beaches are bad, just different. Some people this bothers if they really love that Caribbean white beach/crystal clear water look, but others prefer the Pacific coast rugged, mountainous scenery and sunsets and even prefer the coarser sand that doesn't get into everything- so it depends. I know people who have been to this hotel, it is VERY popular with Canadians- it is a fun place, can be rowdy, with wonderful staff- nothing fancy but everyone I know who has been there has had a great time. Rincon is not large but there is some shopping, bars and restaurants and there is other day trips up and down that coast. |

Thanks Riss! I've been reading reviews elsewhere, and it looks like this hotel would be a lot of fun. Plus, we've been to PDC for the last two years, and I want to see some more of Mexico. It also sounds like this area isn't quite as "touristy" which is also a plus!

![]() problem is, it is hard to find trips there from most American cities, and when you do they are expensive. I think there may be flights to there out of Houston though?

We have been to Rincon and you will like it there. Try to make th public market on Thursdays in La Panita. I'm not a shopper but my wife says it's a good one. There are some very good restaurants and the beach at Rincon is good. The sand and water are different colours than on the Carribean side but that's just colour. As Riss says, it is different on the Pacific side but it has it's charm. The mountains are spectacular and there are lots of things and places to see in the area. I know you'll enjoy your stay there.

Thanks y'all!!
Do you think it's safe to say that the beaches are closer in consistency to Acapulco than Playa?
All I remember from Acapulco is gravel like sand. (And the fact that we could buy tequila at Wal-Mart, even though we were 16!!!) Not that I'm complaining....any sand/ocean is good. I'm just trying to prepare myself!! |

I think the sand right in the main bay at Acapulco is likely similar to downtown Puerto Vallarta, a bit on the 'gravelly' side yes....but the beaches are far nicer outside of the city of PV, north AND south. Mismaloya has really nice, very light sand (south of PV).
Darker and more coarse sand than that fine white Caribbean sand to me is A-OK- except that it can be hotter on the tootsies for walking barefoot, and it can impede visibility in the water (although that has more to do with heavier surf stirring up sand I think). Have you thought about Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo? Any deals to there you can find? The beaches are very nice there. Not as nice as Huatulco though. ![]() The beaches and water are also really nice and clear around Los Cabos- just cooler water temp and fewer swimmable beaches (lots have dangerous undertows). Where we are going in a couple weeks, Manzanillo, the sand on some beaches is almost black it's so dark, because there is an active volcano in Colima- but the water is super clear and it's actually quite nice. People get pretty spoiled with the white sand Mayan beaches.

Variety is spice of life
WE have been all over Pacific Coast of Mexico, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Huatulco, Cabo three times, and then Sayulita last year. Mostly because it's closer to LA and we can make a nice 4 day weekend. But, the ocean, beach and coral sand in Playa are so much nicer than Pacific Coast. We've been to Playa and Tulum 4 times and go back every year now. It is our favorite place to go.
I do miss the mountains and jungle near PV and Sayulita was cool, surf spot and all, but choose one... Playa hands down. ![]() You do have to go for yourself and find out! |
