Whale Shark Adventure

Holbox Island seems to be the hot spot for viewing and swimming with whale sharks. I can't seem to find any threads related to which tour company is recommended over another. We would also like to hear from fellow forum members that have done this while visiting Playa. Was it a long trip to make from Playa del Carmen?? We will be arriving the end of July which I hear is the correct season. I have always always wanted to swim with a whale shark. We even did 10 days in La Paz years ago on a charter boat just cruising the Sea of Cortez searching for the gentle giants. Any feed back will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link Babs! Looks like Luca and Sky have loads of experience with the whalesharks. Luca being the first to spot them off the coast of Holbox. I'm very eager to this...it's been on my life's list of things to do ever since I've read about them.

Centavo: I received your PM, I'll be in touch.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I have another question......Can you scuba dive with the giants or just snorkel/swim ??? I see some pictures but not sure if it is only the guide that is allowed the scuba gear.

We did it two years ago and it was awesome. I think Holbox is the best place to do it. Its also great if you can stay overnight. There are some cute little hotels, some great fresh sea food restaurants, and the little village comes alive at night. They even serve marquesitas made with nutella that are just unbelievable. And the whale shark trips are incredible.
I believe all the tour operators must have a special license and i do not believe they allow scuba.

Here's a link to the government rules and regs: Proyecto del Tiburón Ballena del Atlático Mexicano-CONANP

Only captains and guides certified by the government are allowed to conduct these tours, and they must enforce the rules or pay huge fines if caught allowing illegal activities. They can also lose their certifications.

Anyone try and set up whale shark snorkling in Belize?
My Cancun/Akumal vacation timing is off (too early) to do Holbox, and I've been trying to find a way down to Belize/Plalencia/Gladden Spit where you CAN dive or snorkle with them. They are there now and most likely will be for several more weeks.
Any ideas/suggestions?
