Door County

We are planning our summer vacation and looking at Door County, Wisconsin. A few questions for anyone who may know ... is it very family friendly or more geared toward couples? It does look like there is a lot of stuff to do for families, but I looked at a few resorts online and some look like they are more for couples. We may stay at a hotel or resort a couple of days but mostly we'll be camping.

Any must-dos while we're there? Anyone camped there? Thanks for any suggestions.

Looks like there's a lot to do Door County Wisconsin: Your Midwest Vacation Destination.

It is a beautiful area. You do not indicate the ages of your kids, but since you are camping I'm sure you are into outdoor activities. The state parks have many hiking, biking opportunities. The bay side has warmer water for swimming. If there are water parks, etc. they have been built since I was last there.
It WILL be crowded in summer, mostly with Bears fans. Personally I would go shorly after Labor Day. Less crowds, shops still open and WI usually has great fall weather.

Thanks. In the summer, our kids will be 11 and 13 and they both love to camp, hike and be outdoors. We'd love to go in the Fall; however, the girls will be back in school then so we're currently planning a trip for August. Guess I'd better get moving on reservations.

We haven't camped there (even though we were pulling our camper the last time we were there), but I would look at the state parks. Peninsula State park in Fish Creek is very nice and large.

Some of my favorite memories of our trips there include: a day trip to Washington Island (make sure to see the beach with the rocks; I think it's called School House), pick cherries, go wine tasting, tour a lighthouse, watch the sunset at the park, and make sure to go to a fish boil. One of my friends has gone sailing there, and said it was great!

Warning though. WI state parks sell out fast. I am not sure how you can reserve a campsite, but I would. Peninsula is probably the most popular state park next to Devils Lake.

Thanks so much for the advice! We are definitely taking the Ferry over to Washington Island. And I will check today about availability of the state parks. Thanks again!
