my mother-in-law, new director of el DIF
One of new Playa mayor Roman Quian's first actions, evidently, was to put Delmy's mother, Guadalupe Acosta Martínez (aka "la Sra Lupita" or "la Sra González," given my late father-in-law's high public profile), in charge of el DIF for the Solidaridad municipality, which includes Playa.
DIF stands for Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, and it's a governmental organization focused on such family-type issues as education, nutrition, children's safety and well-being, domestic violence issues, and so on. (The national page for el DIF is here, for anyone interested.) Typically el DIF is run by the wife of the mayor, as it was by outgoing mayor Carlos Joaquin's wife, Gabriel Rejón, during the last administration, but apparently my suegra's very high reputation in these areas (she was also head of el DIF for Benito Juarez municipality, including Cancún, when Delmy's father was mayor there in the 80s, and handled such issues in the disastrous aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert, for example) led to this outcome, instead, for this administration. We are happy to know that Playa will be in such good hands, in this regard. Delmy's mother is very excited about this opportunity and was already at work yesterday and again this morning after being put in the position late Thursday. We send her our love and wish her the best of luck. ![]() Steve & Delmy |

I believe that there are two "heads" of the DIF... there is the "directora general" who performs the day to day work of the organization (the outgoing directora of the DIF was Maria Elba Carranza) and there is also the presidente, the wife of the municipal president (who was Gabi Rejon) . I believe that the new municipal president's wife will still serve this role. This is tradition throughout Mexico all the way to the president of the republic's wife who is the president of the national DIF--more of a ceremonial designation. Just a clarification...

Well normally you're correct, but not in this case.
Apparently their was no spouse involvement in the Mendicuti administration here a few years ago, either. Thanks for the kind comments, M! Yes, she's great. Steve |

How much are you willing to donate to el DIF, then? She commented the other day that one of the first things they were going to need was some sort of mini-bus. She might have some pull with things if you delivered one of those to them, for example.

I will go see her next week to see how I can help, if I can help, I know there is so much to do, but I know the DIF could not be in better hands. and she is such a great lady, I met Roman when he was working for your father in law and everyone had him in such high respect. Thank you for posting this I did not go to the toma de posesion so would have not found that out otherwise. |

Steve, that's wonderful to know that DIF will be in your mother-in-law's hands!
People are always asking me where their donations of clean, good-quality used clothes, shoes, school supplies, books, etc. can go. Do you think this would be anything that DIF would be interested in distributing? I would be honored to coordinate such a thing. As it is, I am often left in charge of bags of goods and distribute them when I can to places I think they are needed, but it seems an organization like DIF would be much more informed than I.Do you think it would be well-received if I were to contact someone at DIF? |
