The KKK and Free Speech

One of our founding principles is free speech, and I'm all for it. However we must be careful. Dirtbags are also entitled to protection, and it's a razor sharp issue. inciting a riot is illegal, but what constitutes crossing the line is so murky it would take 20 Philadelphia lawyers to figure it out. Unfortunately, these nut cases will always attract a small following. Hopefully, they'll get their own dismal little island kingdom somewhere in the middle of nowhere where they'll all implode.

It's complicated, for sure. There was a white supremist group who had a permit to gather in Toledo a few years ago. Protesters countered and there was a genuine riot, multiple arrests and damaged buildings.

That happen here in Indy a couple years ago to Mel. I got a free nite in jail over it. I had to go to the defense of a couple of old good friends I grew up with when they went after one of Klansman. We didn't cause any property damage, but we had a mini riot. I understand they have a right to speak but sometimes I just cannot understand how an organization like the ACLU can even defend it. I would think there are far more important issues for the ACLU to deal with.

BTW, I had to pay a fine and lawyer fee. Would I do it again? You betcha!

I agree we've got members on both sides of the political extremes. I just don't think of anyone here as being an actual member of a group like the KKK.

I'd bet you there are more than a few KKK sympathisers here - or those with deep-seated racist views: it's only natural, after all this forum does seem to reflect the broad spectrum of society, don't you think?

For instance, I could mention one member who happened to confide in me on disliking the blues because it is "n-word music".

But, as in real life racists are usually bullies and cowards who are afraid to come out: so, unlike me, don't hold your breath.

You need not wink at me when making such a statement. I've no clue who you are talking about, but I agree that the use of the n-word on a public forum is offensive. I just have not encountered it here.
