If you're in the mood for a more "US" kind of treat like last Sunday when Rick was craving a banana split, we found this at VIPS, which is a nice Bob Evans/upscale Denny's kind of restaurant. More than just bananas! (On top of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream there were peaches, nanners, nuts, red raspberries, black raspberries, strawberries, chocolate sauce and maybe even more!)

And I enjoyed a very nice (they claimed low-sugar, but it was maybe too good to be true) "pay de limon" (like a key lime pie). I was too busy forking into it to grab a shot of it though. VIPS is a nice place to go for dessert and not too pricey. Oh, and it's in the parking lot at Sam's on the highway south of town.

ula gula on the 5th (sorry can't remember the exact address) has some great desserts. as well as some of the best food in playa. probably our favorite restaurant. they have a chocolate molten cake (takes a long time so order in advance if you're in a hurry) and an avocado cake thats awesome.

also, the desserts at la palette on 8th between 5th and the beach are really good as well. try the chocolate rum cake....

as others said, ah cacao is good too.

Can't wait to get back to Don Carmelo's for some good ice cream on 10th!
Also, that coconut ice cream w/kahlua sounds like a great bet!

Do any of the ice cream shops have premade ice cream cakes for birhtdays? We are celebrating a birthday while we are there and I didn't want to get a cake from the Walmart.

I've never seen an ice cream cake in Playa, but I don't think I'd recommend one, even if you could find them, assuming you want to do carry-out. It's really too hot to think about getting something frozen from point A to point B, for the most part. Your cake would likely be a soggy mess by the time you got it to your room or wherever you hoped to enjoy it.

Living here, it's one of the things I miss about the US. It's all but impossible for me to buy ice cream at the grocery and get it home in an edible condition.
