Automated killing in Pueblo Sacbe

As anyone who has spent time at Sacbe in March, April, and May knows, one of the main detractions to the pleasant life there is the Tabanos that arrive then, and dine on your blood. I can happily announce that Auntieninnie and I have solved this vexing problem. We completed our first Tabano trap today, installed it at my house and within 20 minutes the first two were in the trap. The number of tabanos on my property is low so if it just catches 10 or 15 a day the problem will be solved. Let the rejoicing begin. Photos to follow.

I will be anxious to see how you trap the little villains. They are my arch enemy here!

It's a sad day when we get excited about out-smarting an insect but it sure feels GOOD!

¿Qué es un tabano? Is it something like a mosquito?

They're most likely from the same family as the green head, deer fly, horse fly, gad-fly, etc. These pesky yellow flies inflict a particularly painful bite...the upside is that only the females bite. It appears that one builds up an immunity to the bite...I used to swell up but now I just get a mosquito-like itchy spot.

Here's a shot...

Yep, my reaction is not nearly as bad as the first time. I used to have a major adrenaline rush after a bite and would get all antsy and weird! They still itch like the devil though...

So if you guys catch all the tabanos in SacBe, will you be loaning your trap out to us in Paamul?

Just what do you do with them after you trap them, exactly?

EDIT: And they're more like what we used to call sweat bees back in Ohio... tiny little things with a big wallop!

Loaning???? FlowerBill and I have already been scheming about how much we'll charge for our piezas del arte!

Welcome to FlowerBill and AuntieNinny's Taquiera Tabano en Pueblo SacBe! The menu consists of the following...to mention only a few delicious entres...

Tabano empanizado con ensalada de nopales
Tabano tamales
Tabanos en guacamole con totopos
Tacos de Tabanos Muertos
Huevos Tabanos

...there won't be many vegetarians interested but I think we'll draw the dirty red meat eaters!

teehee!
