Americas Cup Sailing !

It doesnt seem long ago that the Cup was sucessfully defended by the Swiss yacht Alinghi in Valencia, Spain.

A lot has happened since then (for really comprehensive details surf sites such as cupinfo and the like) but its all good news for the USA !

Due to a legal challenge, the next competition will take place later this year, using multi hull craft - which in simpler terms means high speed tri marrans. WOW!

The USA team, Oracle/ BMW are hard in trainning and look very strong and a shoe in to win. The Swiss team Alinghi were just rescued whilst training off France, having capsized their practise tri marran ( forwards...ouch). The boat was subsequently towed ashore upside down.

The current views of the sailing fraternity are that it is possible that Alinghi will concede defeat without a competition, unless they can have the race date delayed by a year.....

That shouldn't prove too difficult, they're probably holding the US boat owners' money in one of their banks.

Ha ha ha.

The Swiss are fighting in the US courts to have the race delayed. Once that is resolved, I imagine the courts will again be involved when the arguement start over the location....

Jez, maybe you can help me out here. I've been sailing most all my life and have done a lot of racing in prior years but it has been primarily with single hulled boats (scows) here on inland lakes in Wisconsin. There are a few multi-hulled boats around mostly Hobies.

One of the things we most enjoy watching the America's Cup races are the tacking duals on the windward legs. My question is that my impression being multi-hulled boats are not as menurvable and if this aspect (and other aspects) of the races could be compromised. Is this likely to be a factor or is my impression based on my observation on our lakes here not applicable to what would be the new Cup boats? Thanks.

BTW, enjoyed running into you at Posada Freud the week of the 9th and thanks for filling Chris and I in on the F1 race.

Sailing upwind in a multihull craft is very different than when sailing a monohull. Multihulls cannot generally sail closer to the wind than 40 degrees. However oftetimes multihulled boats will prefer to sail further off the wind to generate faster speeds. I think the action will be fast and furious if this competition gets off the start line.

Good to see you here in Playa. Hope I can count on you to be cheering for Kimi in a couple of days!

I figured the multi-hulled configuration would change things dramatically. Not sure I'm in favor of it but I'll keep an open mind. Should be interesting.

Yep, I'll be watching. Looks like Raikkonen is fastest so for in practice but not by much. Great to see how competitive it has become.
