Playa Insights

We spent last Sunday and Monday in Playa without planning to stay there. Here is the short story of our stay. After a night from hell in Tulum Pueblo my better half said she really needed a hospital. Took a taxi from Tulum to the hospital in Playa and spent 7hours and $2,000 US to take care of a bout of pnuemonia. Group Haeth will love us when we submit this. Chris really got sick in Campeche and we put up with it on a 13 hour trip by bus from Campeche to Tulum Pueblo. Wanted to get closer to Cancun if we needed to catch an quicker flight or better hospital. The place we were staying in Tulum was right out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. This is a latter story. Took a taxi to the hospital and got excellent care for her. The taxi drivers in Tulum are awesome, the guy seemed as concerned as we were and suggested we go to Plya insted of Cancun as he said it was a great place with good doctors. They wanted to admit her for two days but we talked it over and decided we could lay over in a nice hotel for the same cost. They pumped her full of liquids and antibiotics and we holed up at the Hotel Alhambra. Nice place on the beach just off calle 8. Chris rested fine in a cool quiet place. I let her rest and went out and checked out the local stuff. Had some good food at Carbincitos and bought a few gifts. Met my challenge on my spanish when I went to fill her prescriptions and was amazed when I got it done. I let her sleep a lot and on Sunday eve I went for food and stopped at a place with some asskickin music. It was Chris Bolister playing at the Seista Fiesta. The guy can play and sing! Took Chris there on Monday nite for dinner and to watch him again. She liked him too. We went to our Doc when we got home and he confirmed everything that they did in Play as what he would have done, right down to the meds. Playa rocks!!! Even if I did get offered drugs and hookers at 9:30 am one morning. I did turn down both of the offers and told the guy offerin the hookers " Dude it's only 9:30 am, hookers just after breakfast is just wrong". Long story is that everyone is getting better and it feels kinda good to get home after 15 days and 7 places we stayed . The cats missed us. Trip report will come as soon as the pics are done.

Yes, but who shot the piano player?

Seriously, glad y'all made it back in one piece and I'm glad your wife is okay.

And next time someone offers you hookers after breakfast, just remember... Its five o'clock SOMEWHERE in the world!

The piano player thing?

Naw...

Just my obtuse way of saying, "WOW, you sure had a lot going on!"

I'm glad all turned out well for you. This is one of many stories of excellent care being provided by the not so new any longer PDC hospital.

When I hear what it cost for care though, I often ponder setting up a little shop of my own down there. I could have fixed her up for about $250.00 ... and still made a hefty profit. I wonder what the locals do when they have something serious wrong with them but not $2,000 USD?!

That, and absolutely NO civil liability for malpractice whatsoever!

Kind of a dream situation for practitioners!

What they do is they don't go to Hospiten, they go to Hospital General, or other less expensive clinics, and get health care that would seem to most of us in the US to be subpar.

Skiptown, what a terrifying experience all of that must have been for you and your wife. I'm so glad she is feeling better.

Wow Skip. I'm glad to hear that Chris is okay now. That must have been just awful. I just purchased insurance for my trip. I did that to guarantee that we don't get sick (that and I'm married to Kevin).

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip.
