Sure, to a degree. You're just used to teeny little Portugal.
![]() Each of our provincial economies are still separate in some aspects from Canada as a whole, I am sure it is the same down there-right? Like, our western provinces are booming now because their economies are resource based - and the east is not doing so well because they are more manufacturing based- oh and that pesky cod running out problem in the Maritimes- but that is okay because the Newfies struck oil!![]() ![]() 'Course, it's all balanced out through the provincial equilization payments. So now the west is helping the east whereas it used to be the reverse. edit: Oh, and WHEAT....how could I forget farming? Lots of money in that right now. |

I'm a career counselor who lives in Jersey and works in Philly and things aren't looking too good here for people with experience. Interestingly, the downturn hasn't quite hit the market for new college grads yet. |

I have to say that I'm very comfortable where I am (watch, I just cursed myself) and no plans at my company for lay offs for at least another 3-5 years. Hubby is in manufacturing (cnc machinist) and there are lots of jobs out there right now, believe it or not. Oh, and we're in Connecticut.

Speaking of immigrant workers who are vital to Canada's economic success......
No, I wasn't the one making the threats because I found out that some of my favorites were going to be headed up north to earn more valuable Canadian dollars. |

Around here, most of the automotive-related jobs are having alot of uncertainty (or mabe alot of certainty about being laid-off). My last job, working QA in a small precision machine shop that was dependant on automotive, was going fine, but there were always rumors about impending doom-but it had been that way for the last 3 years.
Now I'm on my 2nd week at a new place, making medical instruments and implants-there are still rumors, but at least this time the rumors are about expansion and growth. My biggest downside is that I now have an hour commute each way. |

The newspapers are full of ads looking for skilled labor, construction, medical, high level admin jobs. Oil & Gas/Petro jobs are booming right now and that is where the high pay is so it is sucking the life out of the other industrys in the area. Nurses or really any one in the medical field can write their own ticket. |

) but they are settling in pretty well in general.![]() What I wonder about is us taking the skilled labour out of the country they came from.....but apparently they can't find work there. And they send money home, which helps their families back home live better...globalization, it's very complex and controversial for sure.
