New: From Seattle
Another Newbie joins the group
![]() Honestly, I am normally a British Virgin Islands traveler, but I am unable to make anymore trips there this year and I NEED a Caribbean fix. Next best option would be Cancun/Playa right?!?!?! Since I've never been to Mexico, I am looking for some insight. My husband has decided to not join in this excursion so it will only be myself and my 10yr old son. I am looking at the Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas. Can anyone provide some details, thoughts, concerns about this place? Is there enough there to eliminate us from having to leave the resort? Is the beach a good swimming area? Finally, we are looking to break-up the Seattle fall nastiness (Read: RAIN!) and planning on a mid to late Oct trip. I know in BVI, this is the end of the hurricane season. Should I be concerned with this time frame for Cancun? Looking at 10/16-10/21 OR 10/23-10/28. Thanks for any and all information! |

Afraid you're unlikely to get much response on Cancun questions on this forum, since its primary focus is on Playa del Carmen. I'm sure there are plenty of Cancun boards as it's such a popular destination for lots of people. For the majority of folks that tend to hang out here, the best view of Cancun is in the rear view mirror.

Yeah, well...out of college since 1998 and a 10yr old to boot....this Betty isn't looking for the "spring break" crowd!
I just need white sand beach and a book for a couple of days. Better than the clouds and rain here! I am looking for the all-inclusive thing (unfortunately and for just this trip!) and the need to not really leave the resort grounds except for maybe Isla Mujeres (sp?). Being a frequent traveler to BVI and not liking the USVI's since they are so crowded, this is a hard one to swallow. But you need to make sacrifices somtimes, right?!?! This is what I keep telling myself, anyways! ![]() So what is your take on Oct travel? Should I just SAY NO?!?!?! ![]() |

Can't comment on tropical October travel from first hand knowledge. We get away from a Canadian prairie winter in Feb/Mar. When we travel in Sept/Oct, it's usually to the Okanagan Valley, or the southern US.

Hi Carrie.
I am a fellow seattleite as well and, although I have only been to the BVI once, I am now a PDC addict. I never even considered cancun. Playa area has beautiful beaches and if you want my recommendation on a place to stay that isn't quite A.I. but is close, I say try out the Shangri-La Caribe. It is small , like 100 rooms (I hate the big crowds at the AI's) but is such an amazing blend of Mexico and caribbean charm! You get breakfast included that is wonderful, and can have lunch there (but I would go to town) and happy hour is a blast. Dinner is included too and is pretty good (about like most AI's), but again, I would go to one of the many fabulous restaurants within walking distance. It is so safe and comfortable feeling in Playa, we always walked everywhere. As Bumper said, folks here are all pretty much rabid PDC fans, and I am just doing my part to make you a convert. |
