Our family spent a couple of hours at the Peanut Shelter today. The shelter visit was excellent! Thank you so much for your hospitality Andy.
The kids are still talking about the dogs, and the youngest wants to go back before we leave. I wish there was enough room to throw a ball for them or something. Hopefully one day, with enough help and donations, that might be possible. The kids each want to do an online adoption, so I am sure you will be hearing from them when we get back. We all had our favorites. Mine were Honey and Candy. Anyone who knows of Andy and Jen's work in PDC who has not contributed to their cause should have red paint thrown on them by someone carrying a sign saying "Only Animals Should Wear Fur". I have no idea what the heck that means, but maybe it will scare someone into donating some Peso's. They are doing an unbelievable job with the animals they take in. These street dogs had nothing except the occasional meal they could scrounge out of the trash. They have spent their lives avoiding taxi's who try to run them over and people who who would rather kick them and throw things at them than do something to help. Even with all of that history, they are all very friendly and adjusting well. Several have medical problems and I know they could use all the help they can get. If you are someone who goes down for a week and spends your time at an all inclusive and/or on 5th Ave shopping, you probably have no idea what I am talking about. Once you leave the tourist areas you'd see stray and homeless dogs everywhere. They are literaly lying in the middle of the streets and sleeping under cars for shade. I could post a hundred very sad pictures of what I have seen over the years in this regard. These are are all intact dogs who breed like rabbits. The city does very little, if anything, about it. And the problem is not confined to PDC ... it is everywhere throughout the Yucatan and probably Mexico. If you are animal lover, just sending a weeks worth of coffee money would make a difference (especially if you go to Starbucks). By the way Andy, your cenote suggestion was a hit with all of us ... thank you. It was peaceful, uncrowded, and relaxing. And everyone jumped off the cliff except for me ... I'm a big fraidy cat.
